Battery Ground Cable (Porsche) 89 S4
I was trying to replace a generic battery ground cable with a correct Porsche flat woven ground strap. The way the Porsche one is made, it isn't flexible enough to mount to the negative battery post and snake it's way out of the battery box. I bent the first cable down 90 degrees but it ended up being too short to reach the chassis ground point after that. When I bent it back I snapped the cable in half. Does anyone have a picture of how their ground strap is routed before I break another $90 cable? This seems like one of those, "should have left well enough alone" situations. But here we are and I really want to figure this out.

We just pulled a Porsche ground strap and I agree – very poor quality. As you say extremely rigid with little give.
They were made in 2018 so they are not 40 years old.
We will send you an aftermarket strap.
Please return the two bad straps as they are covered under warranty. We will get your money back.
Sorry for the trouble.

the cable should be flexible to bend so it will come out of the battery box it sounds like you got as defective new part

This is the second Porsche factory cable I ordered ($68 not $90 BTW) and they were identical. Absolutely no flex at all for the the first 4" of the cable. Maybe a whole lot of bad cables made it through QA. Or... I just have terrible luck. Ha! It does seem like a lot of solder wicked up through the cable. 928SRUS lists an aftermarket ground strap that looks identical to the OE cable. Maybe that's a better option? Or, maybe its the same cable manufacturer who makes the cables for Porsche. I suppose I could email Rodger and ask him to do a flex test.

they screwed them up when soldering the ends on,
clearly the wave cable must be able to flex out of the battery box

buy this longer corvette reproduction one instead. Will have plenty of length to make the turns and also won't break.

Contact mark @928 International and get a nice used factory one that already has the bends in it or run down to Tractor supply, they usually have them in different lengths. Lost a ground strap on my Jag while on a road trip, picked up a braided cable type for 9 bucks, but it was a short one.

Hi,
I did my own cables. Round cross section but it still fits under the battery compartment lid.

Very interesting - this is the first time we have ever sold a Porsche factory ground strap. I also see you ordered a second one as well.
Most 928 owners buy the aftermarket version and we have sold hundreds with zero issues.
I will investigate tomorrow and try and find out what is wrong with the Porsche ground strap.
They are warranted for two years. Shame you did not contact us after the first purchase.

And here I was thinking, "everyone must be getting the OE cable". I am very surprised that the Porsche ground strap would be the "inferior" option.
Roger, thank you very much for investigating this and your generous offer to refund the two OE cables. I of course take full responsibility for my heavy handed modifications to the first cable. I just assumed I must have done something wrong during the installation and ordered another one. "Surely it was me and not the factory cable". That was the reason I reached out to the Rennlist 928 experts. I was expecting to hear, "Everyone knows you put the cable on the battery first and then throw the battery into the box. Perfect fit every time!" Ha!
I do not expect any sort of refund for my manhandled cable unless you will also be refunded by your supplier. This car is my fun weekend project so I was in no way inconvenienced. You have always been my go to supplier for this project. The support you provide is beyond reproach.
Thank you also, to everyone who offered advice and alternatives.
