Default What is this hole?

Sorry everyone, new 928 owner here, longtime P Car owner.

What is this hole? It is on both sides and is definitely factory made. The sarcastic side of me says it is a dirt and grime accumulator but would appreciate it if someone more experienced in these 8 cylinder beasts could opine (this should be easy b/c I am definitely the least experienced 928 owner at this point).

Thanks,

Ian

It may have been a anchor point for the machining process

It is a vestigal casting on 4.5L engines for a exhaust heat crossover for early prototype carb'ed intake manifolds. It disappears with the 4.7L engine.
