Default The Joy of OCIC and one sad note.

Wow! Marc White and Teri Knebel really know how to throw a party. What a great time and thanks to Mo for letting us use his shop and his help keeping some sharks driving. Note to self, any thought of using Butane/Propane mixes for refrigerant has been "explosively" removed from any consideration. Sure hope Louie Ott makes it back OK without any further complications.

On a sad note, many of us found out that Bill Hapke passed away last week. What a great guy. He will really be missed. But he was there with us in spirit (see attached). I hope that everyone who was lucky enough to meet him will take a moment to reflect on some of the fun moments we shared with him at various events, and say a little prayer for him.

Regards,
John Eifert

As Jay Kempf says, "It started out about the cars, but it's really about the people". Well here are three of my favorite people who just happen to help me enormously in keeping my cars running.

I'll second and third JE's comments. Betsy and I had such a great time. Marc and Teri put on one fantastic event, and there are many others who helped make it happen and thanks go to them too. I just wish there was more time to mingle.

Events like this add to the enjoyment of owning a Porsche 928 ... great people and great cars ... what else can I say.

Regards,
I don't know the brand of the refrigerant, but it was some type of mixture of Butane/Propane or something. Anyway, while dynoing his car, Louie threw the A/C compressor belt. One of his A/C lines was manufactured a little long so it was tied back away from the fan (apparently this was done somewhere in Salt Lake city en route to the OCIC). Apparently the snapped A/C belt must have damaged the tie. As he was backing out of the lot after the Dyno, the tie let go, and the line went into the cooling fan cutting it. First there was a bunch of smoke, and then BOOM!!!! the gas exploded scorching the hair off of Marc White's leg and slightly warping Louie's hood. This was probably caused by the A/C compressor oil igniting on the exhaust manifold which then ignited the gas. By this time they got the hood open and everyone was grabbing their fire extinguishers (I'm really going to get one of these things after watching this). The engine compartment was a ball of fire as gas contiued to escape from the A/C line. There were about three or four extinguishers on the fire by then. And then it went out. They cleaned up the powder off the paint and engine (the stuff is very corrosive). They looked everything over, and Louie was able to start the car and drive it to Mo's for an inspection. There was some damage to some plastic parts and wiring sheathing, but it looks like the paint will buff out, and from what I saw and heard, there should be no damage that can't be fixed through replacement and cleaning. I'd say Louie was very lucky. There were some very quick reacting guys with extinguishers including Louie himself, Marc W. and Carl F.

I'm pretty sure they used sheet aluminum on the front and steel in the back. It's been a couple years but I remember talking about it with Marc and he sent some pictures to me as he was in mid restoration. They pulled the car completely apart for the repaint. It was a very thorough restoration.

If this had happened at 80mph on the highway, I'm willing to bet the car would have been a fireball and a total loss.

Same effect as a supercharger on an engine, all that air...........

Thank God it happened on the dyno.

Actually, thank God it happened after he left the Dyno shop, or it would have ended the dyno runs for the day and maybe longer as they cleaned up all the mess. It could easily have started the building on fire and possible have injured someone.

Hi John:

Now I can finally put a face to the name! Great to meet you, and I look forward to reading many more posts from you and seeing you again at other 928-events! Enjoy your new 928-toys!

PS: I think someone took pictures of Louis' burning car and the rescue efforts. Maybe they will be posted here. It was pretty scary to see these huge flames!
