Looks like I need a 3rd gear set
Hi Guys,
It looks like I need another new or used 3rd gear set for a 1987 928S4 manual transmission. Even with the new syncronizer ring it is just below specs. Yes it will probably work, but I don't want to have to pull the transmission anytime soon. I would be willing to buy a new one, but would prefer a used one. I also need it ASAP. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks guys.

Me too. Synchro on 3rd has been usless since I bought the car 22k miles ago, the technique I use is a very gentle change from 2 -> 3, one finger on the gearlever works best, that way you can't force it. I can still change at high revs, just need to be very cautious. I can only change down at speed by double de-clutching, but we should be doing that anyway. Oh - and I don't even bother trying to use third until the gearbox has warmed up.

Hi.
Just because the transmission grinds, doesn't mean that the gear is bad. In fact out of all the transmissions that I have rebuilt, this is the first that has worn syncro section of the gear badly enough to require replacement. In fact the replacement of the syncronizer rings often solves the problems. The problem here was that the worn syncro was used for too long and it wore the mating surface too badly to be within factory specifications any longer. I would settle for a good used gear and a new syncro. I don't want to spend all the money on a new one if we don't have to. But I will.
Thanks Guys.

It is pretty hard to find individual gear sets. Check with the big three, I'm sure they're always looking for used transaxles (almost worth their weight in gold).
New gear sets are MUCHO expensive ... ouch, ouch, ouch.

Hi Rich.
Yes I know that they are hard to find, but I have heard of a few racers demolishing their boxes and I figured one of those guys might have a good used gear. It doesn't seem like the big three are all that big. I can't find a darn thing on any of the websites except for 928 intl. I have come to believe that I may have more 928 parts thank the other two of the big three. Anyway, if anyone comes across a nice 3rd gear set, I sure could use it!
Thanks.

Thanks Erik, but in reality I'm never going to do anything with the gearbox unless it disintegrates. Then it will get replaced with whatever cheap used box I can find, it won't be rebuilt.

Thanks Rich.
I'll try Susan. I like their company the most of the big three. They actually are helpful, return calls with questions and have fair prices. I hope you didn't get the last 3rd gear!!!
