Default Smells like Band-aids???

Every once in a while I will get a hint of burning rubber in the cabin of my 88 S4. It is not very strong and smells more like band-aids than it does burning rubber, but no matter what the smell cant be good for my ride. I do remember someone else having a post here describing the same odor, but I cant find the post anywhere in the archives.

I have driven my car about six times this winter and I have noticed the odor seems to come and go when I am running the heat. I thought at first it could be my blower motor, but I am not entirely sure because I still get the band-aid smell after I shut the blower off, and run the heat only. The smell does go away when I shut the heat off.

Does anyone have any thoughts as to what it could be?

It might be the infamous "Y" connector. There's a description and fix for the problem at http://www.nichols.nu/tip181.htm It usually smells like gas or oil, but I'm sure the smell depends on what's leaked into that area. Check it out, could be a cheap fix.

Good luck!

Little critters had previously taken winter residence in the engine side of the heater core box: unusual odours accompanied springtime driving - although 'band aids' is not the most apt description ....
Loosen the rubber bellows between the blower fan and the plenum/box if you are curious for a peek.

A couple of times after parking the beast I saw some "oil smoke" coming in through the console. It hasn't happened for a while, but will follow the above suggestions if it happens again.

Garth- thanks for the tip. I wish you could smell it you wouldnt believe how much it smells like band-aids.

Carl- I hear you there. It never fails everytime I set money aside to do the things I want- like new tires- the car has something else in mind.
