I also have my father who just finished a 914 project awhile a go and had his fair share of project cars for help if I need it, and as a last resort there is a 928 mechanic here in town I need to go check out.

With the wave of "Ricer" cars in my area Porsche has grown to a higher level, and trust me im not the only one who likes it
Obviously we are for the most part very nuts about these cars, so this is a typical response. Perhaps you are not a typical owner, but you seem to have a great attitude and remarkable experience for a 16 year old. Great to have a mechanically skilled and interested dad too. You're all set for a great adventure with this car.

Ah, sixteen again. I went to school from 7 till 11:30, then drove my spitbox '57 VW bettle to my job changing truck tires in the SoCal desert. For fun we would head to the beach on Sundays in the POS and pray it didn't die on the road. Begged for a few bucks for gas and hot dogs. A few months after my 17th birthday, I was in the service, and facing 5 years of the 'green machine' and all that entails.

So, your seat adjustment doesn't work on your $84,000 Porsche, and you've got a ripped boot, and some brake, and trim issues. I just don't know how I'll sleep tonight.

Congrats on the purchase. AS for being the youngest 928 owner, don't worry my four year old son will have you beat someday .

I'm not a mechanic, but I have heard that a failing master cylinder can cause the brakes to fail and then later seem fine. I remember being told that it is possible for an internal part in the master cylinder to intermittently stick. Obviously, this is a very dangerous condition, so be careful and get it fixed.

Next time I replace one, I'm going to cut it open to see the internal parts and see if this is accurate:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/master-brake1.htm I seem to remember what looked like a be be that sat on top of the master cylinder, which seems like it would have acted as a one way valve. That could have been the part that my uncle meant when he said that something in the master was sticking.

I simply bought one of those get rich quick books and here I am!

Anyway I bought Ron Serio's '87 S4 with 118.5k miles on the clock and it has been my daily driver for a little over a month now and overall im happy with it.

My issues:
A/C was not working when purchased
Paint was keyed by a PO's ex wife from what I'm told
Passenger Seat adjustment switches screwed up
Seat heaters not working (was told they work)
CVC boot ripped
Shift cable broken
Brakes went out (M/C?)
Front Spoiler ripped off by a truck tire on a freeway, mounting points bent and horn sounds like clown car, no mention of it from PO.
Left front headlight leaking
Tail lights have slight cracks in them.
Brake Booster Check valve broke when I was changing spark plugs.

Lessons learned?
ALWAYS GET A PPI

I love the car and nothing is like it.
Now Ron, when I inquired, you told me I'd get an extra bottle of headlight fluid if I bought it.

Ross,

I'll suggest working on one thing at a time and asking for help on issues individually.

As for the clown-car horn, some are just like that. Or the low tone has gone out. Gives a distinctive European sound. You can get Porsche replacements, used ones (low chance there) or any 12V horn that you think sounds manly enough.

I've rehabed some horns by taking them apart or just twisting the tone screw, but those never seem to last, anyways.

When my MC went the brake pedal would drop to the floor, and then work fine on the second pump. I'm sure its a vacuum problem. Try the booster test, do a search.

As for your predicament, good luck. It's up to you to look at the car before buying. If you don't catch it before you buy it, you fault.

Last year I sold my '87 S4, one guy had a PPI done even after he looked at it. When I told him everything that it would need and showed him all of the reciepts from work done, he passed up an $11,500 deal for a $20,000 one. I'm sure my car was in close to the condition of what he bought, but they didn't tell him any of the stuff that was wrong and what needed to be replaced. Therefore for less money he could've had mine. His loss.

Didn't Ron include the shoes, maybe you should check the spare tire space.

I'm down wit dat .... I'm not a proponent of watering things down, seems we do that too much these days. It's a bold statement, but isn't that what we stand for?
