Another possible CS/SE?
I came across this car on instagram and noticed several key CS/SE indicators:
EDIT - looks like the owner has already started the engine rebuild, notice the alloy oil filler neck, Did SE/CS cars have those? I've requested he post the engine number
- Pre 1984 Door cards and rear interior panels (someone would really want to to a lot of trouble for that)
- No rear wiper (hard to tell if it was a factory delete or not)
- No sunroof (not necessarily a CS/SE thing)

The key is in the second to last pic- if that's the engine from the car, what are the numbers on the stamp pad?

Looks like it has the early S4 intake (no ribs), and what appears to be 85/86 metal oil filler. Early 87 vintage is my guess, but never seen the old style door panels in a US model S4 before.
Can anyone "enhance" the engine serial number?

Thank you for asking the VIN. It appears to be a US early 1987 manual S4.
Interesting and I hope that you will get the VIN and the engine's number.
From the oil filler, this engine (and the car) were produced before my own 1987 S4, produced in November 1986.
From the cruise control, this is not a CS.

No rear visors, door interior panels and the short shifter look like a CS. No sport seats, cruise control and oil filler neck indicate not a CS.
This investigation really needs that serial and engine number. What a spectacular find if it is!
PM me if it's for sale!!!

This may be wp0jb092_hs860191… The only US manual 1987 S4 without sunroof (M650) nor Hi-Fi (M490) sound system.
Being a very early S4 is consistent with the alloy oil neck filler too.
Too bad that the build sticker is no longer on the car.
If this is the right car, it was delivered with a left sport seat and a locking differential, but without side protections.
Very interesting...
Lightest US S4 from the records at our disposal.

I just received a lot of Porsche Club Deutschland magazines from the late 80's, beginning of the 90's.
Two of the issues help to confirm a quote from the Christophorus, issue 212, in which the 928 CS was introduced :
"You can remove a little more without undercutting the minimum weight - things like rear seats and luggage cover which don't do much for good placings or wins. Both are possible with a completely normal car- two Porsche men, PR pilot Manfred Jantke and sales eminence Uli Heyl, have already tried this with success, at the Club Trophy event in Hockenheim.".
So, actually, they raced a nice red 928 CS without passenger side mirror, registered BB-PW 410. This was the 20th or March 1988. The car had the race number 999.
I already had a single picture of this car, and I'm almost certain that this is wp0zzz92zjs845061, the first "preproduction" Euro 928 CS with an actual CS VIN. Now, I need to find better quality pictures of this event.
Manfred Jantke was then the head of the public relations.
Ulrich Heyl was the sales director for Germany, and the man who had received the 928 GTE the 18th of March, as a company car
Of course, we need to try to contact both of these men.

Kindly look for any photos of the GTE please. I also do not recall the original plate number for the GTE and that would help me identify it in the many pictures and YouTube videos I am reviewing.
