Default looking at my first 928

going to look at my first 928 this weekend....

1986 model. under 100K but I think odometers fail on these cars, no maint records for timing belts or clutch or really anything, interior and body sounds in decent condition as is, "needs tune up", sunroof in-op, needs power steering pulley??? so AC doesn't work?, cracked dash, windshield cracked, needs shocks, muffler blown out from backfire??, power window blows fuselink/wires from over sized battery?

someone toss out some opinions on value/ fair price or if it's even worth messing with.

I already assume I might have to double my money just catching up on the mainenance and repairs.

I've dumped money into two old 914 and currently have a 944 I'm working on. But I know the 928 is a whole other league.

PPI PPI PPI PPI PPI...............Can't say it enough. PPI
Do not plan to use this car as your daily driver for a long while. Even if you get this car very cheap, it sounds as if the lack of maintenance and the "rigging" have the possibility to eat you alive. Ask Champagne to go along with you. He should be able to give you a fair assessment.
Good Luck

I second that. Move on there are plenty more out there . Trust me you will have plenty of projects to do even if you buy what you belive to be a perfect car. Just the regular maintenance will be enough to keep you busy for a couple of months.

spend the most you can for a good shark. There will be plenty of time later to sink lots of do;llars into it. i would never buy a questionable car that required a lot of work unless I could do it all myself. You really do get what you pay for.

if you want something really nice and are gonna fix it up definitely move on. if you can stand having it a little rough, and the car runs well, nothing wrong with paying a little less and living with a rougher car. 1-3k is extremely low for a running 85 or later in the condition described.

Unless you like to spend a lot of time in your garage, let this one go.

I don't mind spending time working on getting the maint back up to par...provided the body, interior & paint and very nice....and provided the engine and trans are internally fine.

A lot of what it sounds like it needs are regular maint & wear & tear that can beat the asking price down.

I've seen several 928's on ebay around Texas but ebay cars keep going up regardless of how much the car needs, more than the car is worth. A "non-auction" car you can take your time inspecting and work the price down as appropriate.

I agree.

There are two likely scenarios if you buy this car:

You lowball they accept and you get really lucky where the only repairs needed are those observed during PPI and the car becomes worth more than you invested for the car and repairs.

You lowball, they accept, and the car becomes an even larger piece of crap than anticipated with an endless number of repair issues rendering the car both useless and worthless and rendering you exhausted, immobile, broke and _____?

Ok, somewhere in the middle there might be only a FEW repair items that did not make the PPI radar. Still, you would be lucky if that was the case.

If you are a die-hard fix it until it breaks person with wrenches and the ability to wield them, this could turn into a possible deal for you. It is hard to let go of a 928 and the seller may decide not to give it away and just keep it. That is the rub. These cars are frequently worth more to their owners than they are really worth in the marketplace.

Good luck.

Hey, it's free to take a look.

I purused eBay comppleted sales again too. Seems a few nice 86 ish sales for $5k area.

$2-3k is more likely realistic starting point on this car. Hey...sellers always ask more than they really expect to get...
