Need to vent
Trying to replace my passenger side CV boots, got the axle up on the bench in the vice and I have spent the last 2 hours hammering, pounding, talking nicely to it, even took the air hammer to it and I can't get the damn outer CV joint off the shaft.
Been soaking it with PB, hammer more, talk nicely to it more and no luck.
I just needed to vent, so thanks for listening. I'm going to go down a beer and get back at it.
Hope everyones weekend is good, I might be working this thing until Monday.

IIRC (as I watched my wrench do it...)...there a "Porsche Special Tool" that is a big round 'punch' for it.
Do a search of the usual shark DIY sites, or search. There's plenty of references to this out there.

Thanks, I will seach for it. I'm done hammering for the night, I'm going to let it soak in some stuff and try it again in the morning. I'm afraid that I'll damage the CV joint if I keep it up.
I did notice that this was the only boot that was not OEM so I'm taking a guess that when it was replaced, the wrench didn't put any anti sieze on it.
More to follow tomorrow.

Hi instead of taking the outer CV joint off remove the inner CV joint and slide the new outer boot onto the axle , I am not sure that the outer CV joint is removable without using EXtreme force, and it is pretty easy to remove the inner CV from the axle it has a circlip holding it on and usually comes off with a sharp tap

I'd love to do that, but it appears to be welded on there. I'm a little nervous about trying to tap that one off.
Thanks for the reply. After a few cups of coffee, i'm going to give it another go.

I thought the OUTER CV was welded on on later cars, while the inner is circlipped.

I was confused, it happens as you will all find out. It was the inner one I was cussing last night, and this morning, until I took the whole assembly to 5th Gear in Lewisville. Rick used his press and pushed it out for me, the splines on the CV joint were screwed up, in part me and my hammer, in other part, the last time it was replaced it looks to have been put on with a jack hammer side ways.
Rick is a fantastic person to deal with, he found a replacement for the inner part of the CV joint and just handed it to me, wouldn't charge me for the work he did so I snuck in some $$ to his candy/coke stash. If anyone needs work done or assistance, Rick at 5th Gear is great, I highly recommend him.
So anyway, all the boots are done and I'm pretty happy. Thanks for the replies everyone, I really think it is great how everyone tries to help, or at least puts some humor out there for us to laugh at.

Hey Sean, I'm just catching up, so it's good to see you got it sorted out. You're right, Rick's a real good guy with a lot of P-car knowledge, and apparently, old parts.
