I am in the process of removing the engine from my 1982 928S

I have virtually everything removed fron the engine, the bellhousing is released, all I have left are the engine mountings

AS all I need to do is lift out the engine what is the simplest way to release the mountings so I can lift out the engine

Each mount is held by 2 long bolts to the engine. Also, it is held to a crossmember by 1 big bolt. The WSM says just to remove the two bolts off the engine, lift it a little bit and then remove the engine mounts. I don't know why, but with me in the process i broke the engine mounts in half. If you want to save them, then unscrew the plate which holds steering rack to the crossmember, then move the rack out(have the front on the jackstands, then you will be able to push the rack down and back and you will find to i think 19mm bolts. remove them), and remove the two bolts from the engine and the mounts should come out.

The mounts bolt in from the bottom, with the nits accessible after lowering the steering rack. That sheld plate under the crossmember comes down first. That's probably the easiest way.

The top of each mount attaches a bracket that is bolted to the block. It may be possible to unbolt the brackets from the bottom. There isn't really any room to get to them going in from the top.

It will take a little inspection for you to decide which access is easier.

As my one aim is to remove the engine and I am not bothered about the mounts as they are very old and not in good shape can I just remove the 2 bolts that hold each one to the engine itself?

Yep, that's what the work shop manual says to do. I would disagree with Bob, it is possible to remove them, but it is a pain. You have to remove the heat shields first, then you will see them. They are not very big or very tight but they are very long...

P.S. I have been to Malta. Awesome place to live in. I am jealous... When I was there the malta's currency was 2 to 1 with dollar, at that time it was more expensive then english pound!
