I still believe that Roger learned to drive shifting with his left hand and all too often grabs the hand brake by mistake plus like most things you grow used to using just one hand then using the other feels strange... But Rogers point is well taken and if automatics had been invented FIRST and were the norm trying to sell people on 5 speeds might be a really hard sell

I floor the car and drop in the clutch as the rpm hits about 2500 and don't let it fully engage until maybe a bit over 10 mph depending on the grip of the tires and road surface. The clutch fully engaged at 5 mph puts the manual trans car at a continued artificial disadvantage.

Fair on a street start is to put a cop at the side of the road for the 0-60 runs. I aim for that "brisk" maybe pull you over but just for a warning not a ticket type of launch.

Much of the playing with shifting with an auto is related to hills, and times you don't want the car to shift out of some gear for a higher or lower one.

Only about 15% of new drivers learn stick, so its just a matter of time before we are all shiftless.

The rolling start gives repeatability for a test that gives you an idea of how the car will accelerate in everyday use. If you start like that all the time, you're increasing clutch wear significantly. Once in a while is one thing, everytime probably ain't too good. And that's not necessarily the fastest start, which may involve less feathering of the clutch, but does a number on tires. It also gives an idea of what the torque curve is like - take a look at a Subaru WRX: 0-60, 5.5, 5-60, 7.1 - or something like that, there's a good 1+ seconds difference. Look at something with a big V8, and the difference is usually closer to half a second.

To be fair, some of the initial parameters I state here exist for the auto too - for the 0-60 start, they'll brake-torque the start, which you won't typically do, and I believe sometimes they'll even shift the auto themselves, if it proves faster. SO there's still some difference between the times for an auto, although it's typically a bit less than the difference for the manual.

In either case, I think the 5-60 is a valid test, because it most closely represents how you'd typically start in real world conditions when trying to go fast, but not as fast as possible. So in some ways it's more a measure of the cars performance, while 0-60 there's a much larger factor in driver performance, and that variable varies, as well as the optimal way to start the car varying from car to car. Removing all these variables makes for a more consistent result.

Along those same lines, that's always irritated by about the top gear acceleration tests - they let the auto shift down, but don't shift down the manual. While it's a useful stat for gauging flexibility of the engine, it's an apples/oranges comparison. I feel it would be useful to have both measurements for the manual with a downshift and without. Not really an option on the auto.

All right, it's time to let the cat out of the bag!
I have it, on good authority, that Roger actually DROVE A 5 SPEED in England where the shifter was on his left. Jim Bailey ALMOST got it right, but the truth is that Roger is only able to drive a 5 speed BACKWARDS because of the change in position of the controls. It's gonna be a loooooong drive from California!!

It's all normal guys.....you've got an AT 928..cause that is what was available at the time...you drive it..enjoy it....rave about it...and even begin to praise it to the masses...then..one day..along comes a 5sp...you think hmm...gotta try it...and then the AT sits parked..no use..as the 5sp gets driven more and more..then you realized you need more...and another just happens to pop up mistakenly advertised as an automatic....(they are rare you know ) and you snag it from the masses of 928 AT owners who salivate at the chance of getting it..... and you gloat inside.. ....

next we'll hear how Rog is getting a GTS 5sp..cause there is nothing greater than a 5sp 928 hahahaha...... and then the AT's he has accumulated...will hit the market ...starting another cycle of people buying the always available AT 928....lusting for that ultra rare 5sp to pop up...

later
Tom
89GT (that's super ultra rare to all you AT owners )

Well I just pulled the 5 speed out of the 83 Euro and will upgrade her with the 4 speed auto box.
Can't wait to feel the extra punch and the smooth shifting auto.

I am beginning to regret buying the 5 speed in CA. Thats a long drive and in the LA traffic as well.
Still won't be long before she's home and up and running as a perfect auto once I do the transplant.

One down and 5 to go.

I owned a 91S4 and 91GT concurrently for about 4 months. I kept the GT. Why? Top ten reasons.

1. Somebody give me $0.0928 for everytime I got stuck sucking exhaust fumes because the damm auto would not downshift lower than 2nd above about 20-25mph. 2nd sucks at 25mph

2. Theres a big ratio change between 2nd and 3rd in the auto. The five speed ratios tend to fill this nicely. When I took the S4 to the track it was the shift from 2nd to third that would let the other guy pull ahead.

3. The auto weights more

4. The 5sp has a 2.73 rear end.

5. The five speed is more fun. You can leave it in second or third for while when driving without feeling like a dork.

6. You can shift 1 to 2 at redline (6600) on any GT, the 91S4 shifted at about 5800 whether I likeid it or not.

7. There are far less GT's then S4's making them far more exclusive for the discriminating few. If I had another $0.0928 for everytime someone come up and say "NIce car...Oh it's an auto....why didn't you get a stick?

8. I don't need to worry about thrust bearing issues.

9. GT cams rock.

10. Women prefer men who can use their stick well.

Just received the rebuilt gearbox from Greg - RogerBox of course. Plan to remove the slop box from the SE over the winter and turn it into a car worthy of eating tractors for breakfast.
