Rog100,

I notice that you have or have had about every flavor of 928...EXCEPT a GT. What gives? BTW, which year/model do you like best? Why? I mean, give us unwashed the straight scoop...no BS. Gracias.

Harvey

Rogder may still become the first person in the world with an automatic GT. You never know...

The GT is sooooo overrated.
If I could find a 5 speed car that could beat any of my comparative automatic cars I would own it.
My GTS auto cannot be left behind by a GTS 5 speed.
My S4's Auto cannot be left behind by a 5 speed GTS or S4.
My 3 speed atomatic 82's cannot be left behind by a comparable 5 speed.
My logic is if you cannot be left behind why would I want to waste my time with having to use a "spoon to stir the pudding" when the Auto can do as good a job.
If you want to challenge to my thinking try me.
This does not mean I disrespect the 5 speed - just see how many 5 speeds I own????
I just believe that the auto and 5 speed 928's are equal - 5 speeds need more effort to achieve the same result.

I lusted for a GT for a long time 'til I drove one. I admit that it was not in the greatest of condition but having just driven my S4 for several 100 kms at spirited speed getting it on with the GT manually swapping gears 'seemed' slower that the auto shift.

Now if someone could put paddles on the steering wheel.....................Ken?

How about this: 5-speeds are more fun to drive!

Do you like to use the electric scooters at _________ (insert favorite grocery or department store) cause they will do the walking for you?

If it ever comes to that please shoot........

Toward the end of my m/cycle racing career they GP guys were using an ignition interupt system on the gear pedal which essentially allowed the throttle to be held WFO for full power upshifts and minimal shift times................one could argue that's a form of 'electric' auto.

Anyway, we digress, enjoy the wine Roger.

Roger's just itching for a race....

Roger I'm surprised you haven't figured out how to get a dual clutch paddle shifter "Auto" box working... Though I know you think the stock auto-box is the "Bees Knees"

Alan

(Well Yes - maybe you have to be British for that one )

Naaah, that stil woudl be manual shiftingot me, However some of the drag racing bikes use the interrupter that you mentioned and an air shifter. To me those would fall into the automatic category.

Rog, I have owned plenty of both , most recently two s4's, one auto and one man. the autos were always at least a half a sec behind the mans. all things equal. The 5-spd is and will always be the faster option in any production car. Now drag cars, set-up, thats a different story. A very good driver can shift manually faster than an automatic, I know I can. The problem is many people do not have the skill or experience to shift a manual properly- I have ridden shotgun with many that do not. And fact is most do not. Two weeks ago my Audi Mechanic neighbor, pulls up in a 05 s4. He says he brought her home for testing, and would I like to ride with him. I said hell yeah, and we proceeded on. This guy was doing his best to wring this machine out and it was thrilling for him and frustrating as hell for me. He was losing at least 3/10ths on every shift. He dropped me off and I said "good run, Brian" and shook my head up the driveway.BTW I do like both, but I know whats better!

I'm still undecided between auto or stick. When I was into street rods, the "thing to do" was to have a beefed up auto trans...since no one could shift as well or as fast. Some new cars now have "paddle shift"...just a way of making people THINK the auto is a manual I guess...but it's a really fast shift. Admittedly, the auto trans is nice...and I certainly wouldn't kick one out of my garage for eating saltines....but I do enjoy shifting (We don't have many traffic lights (or even traffic) in Idaho...although good brakes are nice to keep from hitting deer/elk).

However, my greatest fear (obsessive/compulsive phobia?) is buying a 928 auto with Thrust Bearing issues past/or future. I'd buy an auto w/o hesitation if I had ASSURANCE that there had been no TB damage. Maybe buyng a low mileage car is the answer to this? Short of a complicated check (most mechanics don't know how to check for this). I think I've pretty well decided to not buy a car older than an '89 unless it's virtually mint and low miles since I already have a pristine '85. Maybe best of all (for me) is to look for a 5-speed S4 or '89GT? I've got some money that's burning a hole in my pocket but I've not yet come across the deal/combination that I'm looking for. I've traveled to look at several cars now and none have been in the condition they had been advertised. Others are automatics that are priced premium...and I'm tempted..and may go there yet if I have to. And PPI costs start mounting up pretty quickly...and some guys don't like having PPI's done on their cars....so my search continues. One of these days, one of you guys will loosen up and sell my your car. Color is nice but not as important as condition. eBay's showing some good cars from time to time but they keep getting snapped from under me by "Buy it Now" or some "off line" deal. I certaintly don't have that game figured out yet.

One good thing about the stick shift, is that it only shifts when you tell it to. That may be good if you're smarter than the programmed transmission. I'm probably not.

Thanks, Rog....you have some really nice cars.

Harvey,
I will repeat again - I have the greatest respect for the 5 speed, - however I listen to the very well thought out logic of Kevin and I'm sure he is right.
Somewhere under the right conditions (maybe off the lights) the 5 speed could be faster by - WATCH MY LIPS - by .5 of a sec.
The 928 is NOT a drag racing car it is a GT - read Grand Turisimo - and comes into its own above 100mph.
Once you reach that speed there is NO difference - period.
Why can't you stick shift girls (sorry freudian slip) wake up and smell the coffee.
