Post Setting ignition timing

Hi,
I wanted to check the ignition timing on my 82 Euro S and wanted to know...
What should line up as the timing light flashes
There are marks on the lower pulley.

What should these line up with?

Help appriciated!

Cool

Jack, I was just messing with my ignition the other day and have the book handy. For an '82 Euro, you should pull the vacuum hose from the distributor, and set the timing to 31 degrees BTDC at 3000 rpm.... at 5000 rpm you should see 36 degrees BTDC. Then re-attach the hose and you should see around 0 at idle speed of 800 rpm.

Be glad you don't have an S2- you can't set the timing on these!

Normy!

Jack,
Look at Shop Manual pages 28-22 ->28-29 here you have all the needed info
If you have no pointer, then you have missed it - That's screwed on the block behind the cover - see fig 5 page 28-23
Regarding the specifications - See page 28-22 here you have the spec. for the different models with different conditions
Good luck!

Hi

If I had a shop manual I would be doing better!!

Just looking for a starting point as I was told the ignition is probably retarded too far

Thanks

Jack,
You should have a 26 (or 23?) mark on the pulley (for 26 degrees BTDC). Your light should flash when this is opposite the pointer coming through the belt covers at 3000rpm, vacuum diconnected from dist advance - and retard, and plug the hoses. My 83 Euro has 26 on the pulley, so you should too.

Hi

I found the 26 but I dont have a pointer, where should it be, is there another reference point I can use (dont think it was refitted a few years back when the timing belt was refitted)

Thanks
Paul

Red face

Jack,
How can you live without a shop manual? The cost for the manuals is peanuts compared to the cost you will safe
I will try to attach the two most important copies from the manual
Order that shop manual ASAP - I heard that is available on CD for less price, but have no experience - I have the 9 volume original German version and I love it - That's my bible!

You should have a pointer that is/was attached to the waterpump. You will notice a small cutout in the lower timing belt cover where the pointer would be seen. I would set the timing using that cutout for now and then go and install a pointer.
FYI-timing on a EuroS is 26 @3000 w/ line off of the distributor.

You need A 928 105 176 00 pointer, attached to the bottom of the water pump with 900 014 066 02 screws, M5x18.

This missing pointer may partially explain why your car does not run well.

Regarding Pointers - When I did my TB, my pointer was shredded. When I replaced it, I put it in backwards - didn't know it till I tried putting the cover on and after I set the cams and the crankshaft at TDC. Boy did I feel stupid -

Moral of my story, make sure your pointer is in the right way.

Hi

I lined the 26 to the centre of the cutout and the car runs much better, also the timing now corresponds with the specs in the manual.
One new problem, when you rev the to say 4500 rpm and lift off car the revs fall quicly to 1800 rpm then slowly back to idel, nowhere near as quick as before

Goes cleanly upto 5500 rpm then a little hesitant but it needs a good run

Also not quite as good cold as is was but overall much much better

Thanks
Paul

Any ideas on the revs falling slowly
