Post Voltage Regulator

I remember seeing something about this some time ago, but I can't find the thread on it.

Anyway, since the day I bought my 928, on start up, all of the idiot lights stay illuminated until I rev the engine past 1700 or so. After that, they go off except for the brake light which stay on till I apply them for the first time.

No jumpy voltage meter or irratic operations that I've noticed.

So, is it a voltage regulator or what?

the voltage regultor does somtimes need a little rev to wake up. it may also indicate a weak ground from alt. to block.

Dave:

Does the voltmeter show +/- 14v immediately after startup, or does it only start charging after the rev?

If it doesn't start charging until the rev, it's failing to excite the field, so no charge.

Possible culprits are the resistor in the instrument panel (68 ohm, I believe *edit - thanks Greg - typo*), the D+ terminal from the alternator (the blue-wrapped small-terminal wire on mine), the PCB, or the above-mentioned ground. Check & clean those before diving into the regulator.

For me, cleaning up the D+ terminal will cure it for a time.

BTW, the brake light is operating normally. Will stay lit until brakes on for the first time.

Good luck, and don't strip the upper alternator bolt hole like I did...

It is a 68 ohm, not .68 ohm.
