Of course, you know where I stand on this issue. Unless you have museum piece, it's a waste not to drive it. It's just depreciating and deteriorating from disuse. Who are you saving the car for?

Point taken...but remember....I live in STOCKTON...i.e. the top 3 stolen, burglarized car area in the nation!!!! This town is rough on cars & our insurance rates reflect it.....
i just feel my short commute (3miles) in town really isn't worthy of starting sharky anyway...& the risk of theft-damage-vandalism from living in this town...I still drive sharky at least a couple times a week to get proper excerise...plus plenty of short trips to your house to fix various things....I think I average 4K-5K a year now...I've always thought of my 928 as a "nice driver" nice enough to win some local concours, but not so nice I won't take it to the track.....after all I bought it to DRIVE IT....just not around town....I guess I like having the option of other vehicles...

Think you've answered your own questions Brian. Keep the Saturn & rest easy that your Shark is safe at home waiting for you to enjoy it when you decide that you want to drive it, not when you have to drive it.

Brian, with such a short commute (<5miles), it would seem reasonable to change your strategy.
a) Sell the Saturn for the good $$ offering.
b) Purchase a basic used vehicle for ~$1500 in "appropriate" condition, like an '80's Toyota pickup with 120k. That's the DD for your situation - reliable, avg mileage, low ins., easy maintenance, no damage stress, park wherever
c) Drive the 928 for everything non-work, essentially as your non-work-related DD
You'll essentially forget about the work DD because it's cheap, dependable, and gets you from A-->B. That work DD will also be incentive to drive the 928 all other times possible

I had the same dilema when my DD, 87 S4, went in for now 4 weeks with TT troulbles and I had to drive the 88S4,i.e. the Garage Queen. I wash it a lot, but what I have noticed is that it seems more easy to drive and "reliable", not that it had issues...but it starts easily...Ican start it when I load my stuff in it on the passenger side. I'm cautious now and ever aware of the other driver but not paranoid. And you'll appreciated a facet that we talk about but not experience a lot, the Grand Tourer, I not dragged out after driving 50 miles home. Best of Luck. Ed M

The 928 is a great daily driver, particularly if it doesn't have to be!
I've driven my daily (mostly; I've got another car & plenty of bicycles) for four summers (no winters) with only one critical problem (LH failure) that left it undriveable.

Brian, I checked with al Gore. He said, "Tell Brian to drive it and enjoy while he can. A few more years and we'll have that CO spewing monster off the road for good". He was in a hurry to catch his private jet to Palm Springs for lunch so that was all I got.

As you drive your car and the little things that make it special start to lose its shine you may start feeling different about your car.
If the car is in good shape, like mine, I want to keep it that way.
Something about opening the garage and taking it out looking as good as the last time you drove it in.
They do say owners lose there love for a new car after a year. So if you drive it less you can stretch out that year for a long time.
I never drive my 68 Vett but when I do it pumps me up so absence makes the heart grow fonder, or something like that.

I purchased my car with the intent it be a DD, 40 hwy miles each way, maybe 4 days a week. It wasn't pristine (136K miles), so I'm not obsessive about the wear and tear, and so far, logged about 9k miles in the past 4 months. Sure, gas is a bit more, maintenance, oil, tires, and brakes too, but I enjoy every mile of the ride. Heck, if all it means is a TB/WP and a few other bits every few years, I consider it worth the price of admission. Doing most of my own work, the 'easy' stuff isn't much more than anything else, I just defer to a shop for the TB and the like. I suppose it's like asking what's the best ice cream, opinions will vary, but the only one that matters is yours.
Good luck either way...me, I bought it to drive and do, every chance I get!
