Default Sell the daily driver...drive sharky daily?

Okay
Everyone knows how much of a freak I am about my 928....never driven in rain, or in any type of bad weather.....but I just got a offer on my 2002 Saturn daily driver that is a very good price.....so my dilemma is do I grab the cash and drive the 928 for a year as a daily driver until I can afford to buy a new daily driver....????????????

I've asked this ?? before, but not as serious.......someone actually wants to buy my daily driver.....

So my "concerns" (more like anxiety) are:

1: Will the 928 be reliable? (I think it will)
2: Will I have a heart attack when I drive it in the rain? (most likely)
3: Will sharky get damaged or broken into during this time span (unlikely when parked in front of a Police Station)
4: I dunno......................

In an absolute worst case scenario that sharky breaks down I could easily ride my bike to work, its only a few miles.... I could use the exercise!!

HELP

I would not rely on a car that's

a. so expensive to fix
b. A potential target for people who you have/had to discipline (It's better they don't know what you drive)

Why drive your shark? Gerry lives just around the corner, you can "borrow" one of his everyday.

PM Tarek, he drives a 928 daily and has for a long time. I can tell you that there will be more maintenance to keep the 928 ship shape then there would be for a newer, boring car.

I have driven my GTS almost daily for 7 years - only 1 issue that caused me delays in driving - shifter cup disintegration mean't I had to drive 1 mile home in 2nd gear - would have been a much bigger issue if further away..

I have had to make other arrangements usually 2-3 times a year to take it in to the shop for required & preventative maintenance - I usually can do this sync'd to my travel plans and not have it be a big deal... So routine maintenance is the biggest challenge - usually takes more time in the shop than a generic car given limited choice of mechanics (and more complex issues too!).

In the end... you like driving it right?...

If you are strapped for cash I think the answer is that you need at least a beater JIK.

My car has been a DD since I put it on the road last September, but there are several Mondays (including today) when the PM ran longer than expected and the car wasn't available for work.

Driving in the rain is downright fun, so that's not an issue IMO. My car handles better and has better visibility in the rain than most other cars I've driven.

Brian,
This is one of those psychological questions, such as "how would you feel if...". The transition from pet, trophy car to daily work horse can be difficult and really depends on your threshold for worry. I had one of my pet cars keyed from front to back once, and even after repair it never seemed the same. That's just me, but stuff like that might bother you too.

If it was me...Not just no, but HEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLL NO!

Between having rock chips, road tar, rocks falling from trucks or spun up by them, idoits on cell phones, etc; there is noway that I would put my car in harms way so often. Plus the additional cost for more PM. It just seems like a bad idea all the way around.

Just as a point of reference, I changed plans and bought the 928 instead of a beloved Alfa GTV6, so that I wouldn't have to launch an anti-rust overhaul every 3 years or so.

Only a few miles? That just sounds like a proper minimum lube cycling for the drive train.

Regards

There are several, including me, here that drive them daily. Sure PM is going to be a lil bit more, like oil changes and brakes. But crap, if you keep them stuck in the garage they will just rot.

Drive it and have fun. I'm put 12k miles on mine in 14 months.

Mine's a DD, even after the SATL incident I don't find these cars to be unreliable at all, in fact they seem to be better the more you drive them.

I think you've already answered your own question right there. But there a few things to consider before you do it.

1. Will your insurance cover you driving it to work. Mine doesn't.
2. Do you have a repair fund setup for the shark? I'd say $2k minimum.
3. Will you have to/mind parking it outside? It takes a lot to get a car detailed - and it can become undetailed very quickly.
4. What color is the bike? (BTW, if I had this option, I'd it as often as possible. I need the exercise too!)

Mine is almost a DD....

First, people will be allover it like flies on S**T. That means hand print allover and they will be tempted to walk away with your valve caps...

Two, I find myself not enjoying the drive as mutch BECAUSE the drive to work is in hevy stop and go traffic when I work in the morning; not the same when I work in the evening.

ps; it as been very reliable so far...

pps; it gets durty very fast (mine is black) in the rain.

I drove mine almost daily for the first two years of ownership. Then I realized the mileage was piling up to quickly and I bought a daily driver Mercedes 500E. Now the shark goes to work with me on nice sunny (but not too hot) days, maybe once or twice a week with some trips on the weekend.

For me, it was just the added mileage each year. I went from 15,000+ miles per year to no more than 7,000. But still a blast to drive either way. It helps that the Merc is almost as fun to drive.

Hmm
1: Yes it will, since I never got around to getting the better policy
2: Technically no, but I will have all the $$$ from the Saturn in the bank!
3: YES...I hate parking sharky anywhere other than my garage...
4: The bike is blue (actually both are blue)..but I could borrow one from work which is black & has fancy "police" stickers on it....

I really don't need the $$$ & it was nice having two cars + sharky when sharky was down for a month with a bad fuel pump....

Of course if I sell the saturn....then that $$$ could go towards my 5 speed S4 that I've been sorta looking for.....but then I'd have to get a divorce!!

I do like the idea of NOT driving my 928 to work.....I would be SO PISSED if some arrestee decided to take some vengeance on sharky....I would be quickly unemployed if I caught said arrestee vandalizing sharky.....if anything happens to the saturn I really don't care.....

I am leaning towards keeping the saturn....it is reliable, has new battery-tires-brakes & gets good mileage + is cheap & easy to fix...sure its slow and handles poorly (think HUGE understeer)....I just think I would get an ulcer worrying about sharky everywhere I park it...
