Default Holbert car engine oil analysis results (AMSOIL/Amzoil :))

Just spoke to the guys at Blackstone. my latest results are exactly the same as last time. almost no changes, except aluminum went up slightly. filtration is excellent. they urged more frequent oil changes, as i have been stretching it out to 4 weekends, or over 6 hours of racing.

when i mentioned amzoil, they re -assured me that its one of the best oils to use for racing appliations. When i mentioned mobil 1, i got a pretty telling chuckle from the analyst. for street, its fine he says, but there are many stories of lost engines due to poor oil performance, mobil 1 turns to water at racing temps.

so, if anyone is running anything other than redline or amzoil at the track, they are taking a risk, in my opinion. (and im sure everyone knows that this is only my opinion, based on my sucess with the Holbert car over the last 6 racing seasons!)

they are sending me the detailed report via email tonight if anyone is interested

Ahh..gotta love it...Amzoil...the AMWAY of motor oils... and probably the only reason I don't buy it. I'll stick with the worlds best Castrol TWS 10-60 or Redline 20-50

I hear great things about the Penzoil Platinum series as well. Its been recommended by Terry Dyson of Dyson Analysis.

EVOO...

If it's good enough for Rachel Ray, it's good enough for me.

I think anyone is that buys a case!

I only share what i know. The holbert engine record speaks for itself.
Kind of like a living commercial.

If the guys at Blackstone also feel this way about mobil 1, for racing use, and have seen it turn to water at racing temps, why would any of us use it? (especially if you are going to track a 928)

FWIW I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who supports more than a few tracked ZO6 Corvette's.

Except for one, they all use Mobil 1 5w-30 in their cars.
At Road America they run low 2:30 lap times. Some of the T1 cars are in the mid 2:20's. Since I've been running with this group in 2004, they have never experienced an oil related failure.

These are stock wet sump motors with no modifications to the lower end. Most have cam / head work. I'm not sure if any of them have custom oil coolers, they might.

One car in particular was just fitted with an LPE (Lingenfelter Performance Engineerins) 383 engine. When they asked what oil he should be using on the track, they said "Any synthetic will do". They specifically asked if Mobil 1 was ok. "That will work just fine" was the response.

These cars see at least 6-8 DE weekends per year. Most of these guys also participate in various driving schools, including the Radical program in Parump, NV. They are very experienced and very fast drivers.

Mark, at least learn to spell AMSOIL correctly if you are going to keep harping on it......

Mobil 1 seems to work well for professional racing teams, maybe its just no good for us amateurs....

I think there are a LOT of engines that can run mobil 1 and probalby wesson oil and survive. heck, i saw al unser drive a viper with no oil, after treatment with Slick 50
I think the point is, our 928 engines might be a little more sensitive to oil viscosity breakdown under extreme conditions. There seems to be a flaw in the design of the 928 oiling, and one of the tell tale issues is low oil pressure when mobil 1 is hot.

when blackstone representatitves ALL are familar with the issues of mobil 1, AND, you see the luck i have had on an engine running other synthetics, and you see the number of 928 failures on mobil 1, i would lean toward other oils. escpecially those that dont trigger the oil pressure light when at 275 degrees F.

call me crazy, but do you know anyone with more racing miles on a 928 engine? Its a testimonial, thats it. take it for what its worth. But, a bunch of vets with a totally differnet engine design, is hardly a valid comparison.

also, regarding the iron block, pushrod american V8s running 10-30weight oil, the T1 record at road america is in a new viper (that showed up for our race back in 2005) and is pretty stout and runs a very fast, 2:25.xx. Its 520 rated hp and the T1 vet type suspension package driven by a pretty good driver, Scotty White.
The Vets usually run in the 2:30s if we are talking about the old Z06 C5s.
The fast ones are pretty well prepared, and even the older engines are near 380rwhp (stock Z06s are near 355rwhp just off the show room floor for the Z06 C5)

Good one Mark.

And you're a champ for taking all the ribbing and keeping it light. Good man.

Just posted the info as an FYI. What a new Vette needs to survive is not apples to apples what a 928 engine wants.

I plan to send my current oil into Blackstone after a few thousand miles to log my own data. I'm running Royal Purple in two of my cars right now. It was on sale at the local NAPA for less than Mobil 1. Picked up a few cases.

I remember that commercial!! What a joke.

I forgot Scotty B White's record lap was in a Viper. IIRC there was a vette or two this year that came damn close to that time.

Mark,
Any plans to run a larger / external oil cooler any time soon? 280 degrees seams a bit high for any oil.
