Exhaust!
I'm gona have my exhaust done on Thursday from cat back. I wana get more of a muscle car sound to my 928. Any suggestions on size of pipe 2.5" or 3". Has anyone done glas packs on a 928?

3" w/ Flowmaster muffler would be my recommendation. They sell different chamber sizes so you can get the level of noise you wish.

I also recommend the flowmaster.
928 Specialists have a bolt-on, cat-back system with a flowmaster...
The Flowmaster mufflers were made for American Muscle cars, to give them the sound you want...
I tried glasspacks, and they sound great at Idle, and at low RPM, but once you get on the gas, they get WAY too loud...
I like the sound of a Flowmaster, and a Monza baffled tip on the end...

I also have a flowmaster my 84 EuroS. It is the Afterburner32 from 928SP. I prefer the sound more than the Borla, but believe the Borla sounds more like a muscle car. IMHO

In my opinion the flowmaster makes a " whooshing " sound under hard acceleration , higher RPM ...Borla has the hotrod sound but it is all very subjective . If you put your muffler where the cat was and run a long 3 inch pipe it will have much of the burble , burble of an inboard motorboat at idle .

I think it is fun to name my car. Heading back from SITM '03, someone was driving slow in "my" lane. Well instead of honking the wimpy sounding horns... I desided to honk my exhaust by stomping on it a little. I liked the sound, and told my friend, "Hey man, that sounds like Chewbacca (from Star Wars)". He agreed! Tested it out again... YEP! At about 70-80mph, in 4th gear, give it a little stomp and it's "angry chewy"!
So, that's what the flowmaster sounds like on my car... YMMV
Chewwwy.... Bwaaahhh!

I am still looking for the ever illusive high revving Euro exotic exhaust sound.(Close your eyes and think Lamborghini or Ferrari..yes, I know, they are 12cyl) I think the only way to achieve this is to use a dual resonated Monza tip with a smaller sized muffler up stream.
Jim is right about "tuning" your exhaust. I have tried a few diffent set ups since my original Anza decomposed. The further up the line you run your muffler, the different note you get at the outlet.

I removed the intermediate muffler and installed a Magnaflow where the factory secondary exhaust is located.
It looks good and sounds like a 32V car with an RMB.
The magnaflow is a pass-through muffler with baffling on the perimeter to limit high frequency resonations. You can see through it. In essence... Great Bwaaaah and an awesome idle rumble.

Also like Scott C, I did the magnaflows in place of the secondary mufflers on my 87 and it sounded pretty similar to the RMB at idle, but when you got on it... It sounded awesome. Driving sounds like a big pissed off cat, real angry purr. I used all 2.5" piping from the (gutted) cats on back and those two combined I did notice some more torque. I'm sure if I replaced the cats with the Ott crossover it would sound even better and I'd gain probably another 10hp. One day I'll get sound clips, one day...

Three Wheelin'
While at SITM this year, I felt the best sounding car there was Tom Faulkenberg's GT. He was running a beta exhaust system that 928 Specialists will be selling soon. Dave said at the time it will be about 2 months.
From my understanding, it will be modular. So if you wanted a cat-back system you can have it. If you decide to replace the cats later with a 'test' pipe, you can buy that test pipe which will bolt right up with no additional mods, etc, etc.
If you like a raspy sounding exhaust, you won't like it. However, if you prefer a deep, resonant, aggressive sound without being loud, this exhaust is for you.
So maybe you'll want to check out this exhaust when it becomes available. It is definitely at the top of my list for 928 exhausts.
The second best was Dave and Jeannie's GT (..ahhh Jeannie......). Damn, where was I?! Whew, alright, I'm ok now. It was sitting in the Holiday Inn parking lot when I heard it being revved. That car has cats, the smaller GT resonators, and an RMB. It had a really nice aggressive tone while not being loud.
That Jeannie is downright incredible! And such a sweetie too.

My '85 Euro has the stock Euro configuration - the manifolds come down into the factory dual outlet resonator, then the rest is the standard factory twin-pipe system like the '85-'86 cars have. No mods at all to the system.
It's surprisingly loud for a factory exhaust system. When I drive it to work, it sets off the (overly sensitive) alarm in a minivan in the parking garage. It's not loud enough to tick people off, but folks definitely hear me coming.

Bryan:
Seems you've got the same alarm-setting-off-exhaust that I do. My cats have been replaced with Louis Ott's "x" cross-over. The rest of the exhaust is stock.

I put together a 3" Flowmaster system, exactly what I wanted; but I'm losing the hearing in my left ear!
As Jim said, it sounds a bit too much like a motorboat at idle. And it's especially loud when cold.
My current setup:
Factory manifolds -> Delta Flow 40 series -> 3" -> 12" resonator -> 3" -> 12" resonator -> 3" -> Monza twin tip resonator.
<img src="http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/IMPTS/40_Series-D.jpg" alt=" - " />(13" long case, 9.75" wide, 4" thick)
I had a homemade 'pop-off valve' setup, which quieted it down some more, but rattled and looked goofy too. I've since removed it.
I'm researching stuffing in this setup next:
Factory manifolds -> 70 series Big Block II -> 3" -> 12" resonator -> 3" -> (Monza twin tip resonator) or (open twin tip).
<img src="http://www.flowmastermufflers.com/web10/IMPTS/70_Series.jpg" alt=" - " />(22" long case, 10" wide, 5" thick)
If I could have a high performing QUIETER exhaust, I'd be real happy.
The car is subtle, so the exhaust should be too...
