Default Bearing madness

When you are fixing one 928 parts prices are not so bad. If a shop is doing the work then you are stuck with the parts they buy. However when you have more than one in less than perfect condition (who am I kidding most of mine are in bad shape) then saving a dollar here or there is a big plus. For example, I just got a close out on lower ball joints for $60 each. I bought six. At the current supplier price the price would have been $750. I saved almost $300 shopping around.

Recently I rebuilt the torque tube. I bought the original kit for Jaeger Engineering. It as a nice kit and after severely modifying the instructions I ended up with a rebuilt torque tube for a fourth of the rebuilt cost. But after finding that the bearing supplied were common bearing I looked around and found bearings for $13 each or less than half Jeager's price. So a rebuilt torque tube comes down from $450 to $39. Multiply that one a few times and you can buy another 928.

So what other bearings are availabe frorm third parties. Turns out most seals and bearing are available for very little money. For example, the two bearings in the 4 speed torque converter cover are the same 6008 bearings used in the throw out bearing. The throw out bearings from 928 Specialists is bewteen $312 to $183. Yet the 6008 bearing Porsche uses is a very very common bearing coming in many styles - even ceramic. Further the inside bearing is only about $4. The bearing is rated for 5800 RPM and for a few dollars more you can get the same bearing sealed rated a 10,000 RPM.

The throw out bearing presses apart easily. The bearing presses out of the shell and the inner race presses out of the inner part of the bearing. Nothing special here, just a common 6008 bearing.

I found the same with seals for the rack. The most common seal to fail is on the right side. These are commonly available for $4 as well. The more I dig into things on the 928 the concept of expense single component replacement falls away and the real service parts needed are readily available and very reasonable. Before you order those very expensive parts try taking something down to the next level. In most cases you will find a common part and save considerable on repairs.

Thanks. I'm all for that. When I rebuilt my PS pump I ordered one of the seal kits from a popular vendor. Not one of the big three. Well the only seals that fit was the shaft seal and one of the inner O rings. I ended up going to a local hydraulic shop and got the other O ring for a buck. I'm certian the shaft seal could have been had for a couple of bucks had I tried to find a replacement using the number on the front. I was also able to find bearings for my air pump at the local NAPA.

I don't have the release bearing in front of me and I can't picture how this works, do you have any photos?

for the torque tube and the throw out bearing you want to get the best bearings you can , they do come in different grades possibly for heat ratings and max speed
The TOB runs at engie speed Just like the TT bearings do

These bearings average $7 for top grade double sealed.

Thanks for all these numbers. I msee I am late in this discovery. I will pull them all together and post them to my web site.

I will also post some pictures for pressing apart the throw out bearing.

The more of these we find, the better. In 15 years, there will be even less 928 specific stuff.

Flappy bearings for late intakes:

HK1012RS are the right size and have a seal like the originals.

nice thread

Would love to see a database started by someone, preferably someone who's not selling them and triples the prices.

I purchased torque tube bearings and inner sleeves from Jager also. The bearings were Chinese so I called a bearing supplier and purchased SKF 6006 bearings for 26$ each. I did use torque converter flange bearings from 928 Specialists. Most bearings can be purchased from a bearing specialist reasonably and of higher quality.

Shop around a bit. I got the torque tube bearings for under $14.

Thanks to those who contributed to this thread. I will indeed start a page on my site with a complete list of alternative bearings with some information on how to replace the throw out bearing and include various suppliers for each type. It will take a little bit becuase I am buried in a web site rewrite for my real business. I will include a page for seals as well.

Of course if someone one wants to pay me triple the price then that is OK as well. Just make sure the minimum order is $1000 and include the same for shipping. As I understand it that is how shipping is not being calcualted on shipments to the East Coast.
