The 928 auto transmission is made by Mercedes Benz.
Here's a pretty good site with some general MB trans info, much of which is applicable to the auto transmission in our cars: http://articles.mbz.org/transmission/

From the Rennlist Administrator, John D. -
------------------------------------------------------------------------ http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...d.php?t=212855 Lately, Rennlist has had a number of businesses and "marketers" soliciting their wares in threads and posts. Some are veiled, whilst others are more brazen. Since Rennlist is the single largest Internet site dedicated to Porsche automobiles and enthusiasts, it is bound to happen. But....... To be clear, Rennlist would not exist except for paying Sponsors and Members - and they, along with us - feel it is unfair that they subsidize non-Sponsor sales and marketing efforts, often times with competing products with Rennlist Sponsors. In short, if you are not a Sponsor, the Rennlist Charter prohibits commercial posts to the Forums. What is commercial solicitation? For example... If you post We/our/my company has... - you are selling something.... If you post We/our/my product is... - you are selling something.... If you post We/our/my customers'... - you are selling something.... If you post We/our/my will be announcing... - you are selling something.... If you post We/our/my test results for our... - you are selling something.... If you post We/our/my can make or supply that... - you are selling something.... If you/your company/product would like to have your unaffiliated/unbiased customers talk about your product - they are more than welcome to do so. However, as a commercial vendor with a sales intent - you are not. Further, you are more then welcome to participate simply as an individual enthusiast - BUT NOT as a vendor/sales agent with a sales agenda. As well - a "Rennlist Member" does not broker you being a "Rennlist Sponsor" and acting as such, no more than being a Member of a car club entitles you to receive a free commercial full-page color advertisement in their monthly publication. Finally - if you would like to become a Sponsor - the entry level flat rate is $125 per month, payable three months in advance for not less then one year. Your business will be listed as a Rennlist Sponsor on the Sponsor page without a banner in rotation - and your title changed to reflect your support of this site. You may PayPal your payments, fax a credit card or email jmunson@rennlist.com or admin@rennlist.com for other payment or Sponsor plans (such as a rotating banner, dedicated forum Sponsorship, etc.). Until you become a paid Sponsor, please understand your "advertisements" will be either edited or deleted, as it's neither "fair" to those who support this site - nor "us", the Rennlist community. My thanks for your understanding, John D. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ .

PREVENT THRUST BEARING FAILURE (TBF)!
TBF is a condition that occurs in later model 928s with auto transmissions. The cause is widely debated, but the result is a destroyed block, requiring engine replacement. If you have never had your flexplate examined for preload, you would do well to review this information as well as these two write-ups and implement the procedure. TBF Info - courtesy Capt. Earl Gilstrom Measuring Crankshaft End Play - courtesy Tony Harkin Checking Flexplate Preload - courtesy Richard Andrade & Dan Warner A Nice Write-up by Bill Ball: http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforum...pictorial.html

Upgrade Key Head to LED
Scroll down to the next DIY write-up: http://p-car.com/diy/key/ Clarification from Bundy: I used this source for the key mod: http://p-car.com/diy/key/, but I found the polarity incorrect in the instructions (I submitted a correction a few months back). Instead of "The short post goes to the battery, and the long post gets wrapped securely around the copper pole." it should be "the LONG post (always positive on LEDs) goes to the positive terminal on the battery, and the SHORT post gets wrapped securely around the copper pole." I found the end results were amazing though - very bright!

Radiator Fittings
Do *not* over-tighten the fittings on your radiator. Those fittings are attached to an incredibly fragile aluminium oil cooler inside the black plastic end-tank, and will twist out to cause oil and water to mix inside the radiator. Losing a seep of coolant is a lot better than mixing oil and water. Also, always counter-hold with extreme caution. Rear Hatch Motor Can Sever Fingers The hatch motor is a dangerous thing if you let your fingers near it. It cycles on its own if it senses a ground signal. Also it will continue turning till it has completed its rotation (I think 360 degrees). If your finger gets in the way the motor is such high torque that it will injure you, possibly severely. Please be careful, it i easy to ground it out while working on it.

Requesting CarFax Reports
Please do not post asking for folks to run a CarFax for you. Rennlist supports the CarFax TOS (Terms of Service) which prohibit providing free reports to non-subscribers.

John D. gets 928 religion. From an e-list posting dated Tue, 25 Mar 2003 20:47:18
Recollections of a "928 Experience".... This will be challenging - let me give it a try. I still have "the grin" - so let me try to translate that into words. You look at it - and it is "there". Poised low, with an elongated hood, and swept-back lines following thereafter, the outline says "drive me". So, you take up the open invitation. The door closes with a soft "thud", and you are in the "Zone". All is quiet, the world melts away. Your thoughts of what you should be doing become thoughts of what "is" - and what "is" surrounds you with perfection in design and human engineering where "people" meet "Machine". The dash pod looms close as you adjust it to your "zone". You adjust the seat, check the pod, check the wheel - and look at what starts the beast. The key hangs invitingly - beckoning your hand intervene. You turn the key - and the "zone" throbs. Not the starkly rasping sound of a flat-six, but rather - the dull throb of eight cylinders all beating to the same rhythm - a calliope of machine, exhaust note - and the throbbing still exists as a "grumble", not a "whine" that exists in other lesser automobiles. Man has now truly "Met Machine". You are part of that "zone", you are part of that "music" - and the "throbbing" continues. Selecting first, the gear shifts into the gate. The clutch responds - silky smooth to the touch - and your right foot presses gently. Anticipating your needs - the "Machine" responds - the throbbing increases, the tone changes - and you are still in the "zone". You are "the zone". Second gear comes much as the first - but faster still. The throbbing changes to match the rhythm of your pulse - faster, faster- until both the rhythm and the throbbing feel like they will, or must - change. But neither give away to the beat or the rhythm or the throbbing which transcends both man and machine . Faster still, the "Machine" asks for more - and you acquiesce to the needs of the machine - bringing into 3rd, your foot presses ever gently again. And "the Machine" doesn't respond, rather, it "anticipates". Surely - it "knows". The headlights, sunk low into the fenders, can surely see. They anticipate - and see where you want to place the "Machine" - and it takes you there. You are "one", with this machine, as you don't "drive" it - you enjoin it in your thoughts - and it responds. Steering is light to the touch - and it responds. You imagine it around the corner - and it is there. You believe that you are "one" with the "Machine" - and you are. Pressing the brake pedal, as you slow both your heart and the throbbing of the machine. And it is firm. It reassures you that the "Beast" can be reigned in - slowing, stopping - but eager to do it all again. And it beckons you to do so, The dull throbbing through your seat demands it be so. And again, you respond to the "Machine". Every time you are in the zone - you are the "Machine". And this Machine is your 928 - where "Man Meets Machine" John D. _________________________________________________________________ .
