Post Too Much Oil?

Just out of curiousity, how would a car perform if it had too much oil? My car has a slow oil leak due to a stripped oil pan plug. It was recently in the shop for an extended period (2 weeks), and the shop owner claimed that in that amount of time it lost 4 quarts of oil. I have a very hard time believing that - (especially since in the pan I have under the car in the garage, it has leaked less than a pint in the last 2 weeks! If indeed he did add 4 quarts, and I were running with LOTS of extra oil in the system, would it cause any problems? If so, what kinds of problems? Thanks in advance!

My one experience with too much oil (about .5-1 quart too much) resulted in a blowout in an oil breather hose beneath the intake. It misted oil up through the tubes and onto the hood liner whenever I hit the gas hard.

I over-filled after checking the oil before the engine had warmed.

I agree with Dave, over filling the engine and transmission will raise the oil level, causing the fluid to contact rotating parts, crank, rods in engines, gears and drums in transmissions, causing the fluid to aerate and foam, reducing the pumps efficiency,( low oilPressure ) On an engine with worn piston rings the oil mist could blow by the piston rings fouling the plugs.

Excess oil can also do major damage if the engine is worked hard. I have heard of oil drenching the bores, and if the temperature get high enough, being carbonised (cooked hard), and damaging bearings and oil pumps.

Of course, the question that immediately springs to mind is -

Have you checked the oil level?

Ditto Wally. I was thinking the same thing until I saw you beat me to it! If you have to much oil you can always drain and refill with the correct amount. 8.5 qts.

Did i miss something? I always check my oil when the engine is cold. Is this the right thing to do?

Cool

Check the oil with the engine at operating temp.
