Bumping this thread up since I just popped down to Louie's place yesterday to pick up a
"1990 GT transmission" for my track car I figured I better tally up the costs...

Details are listed in the first post but so far as of October 2009 I'm sitting at $12,514. bought a few bits..and sold a few bits...I haven't finished the car for SCCA racing this year due mainly to the economy and wanting to save some moola just in case. I'm hoping that things stabilize this coming year and I'll start into the SCCA series. March is the SCCA Class in Portland and now that I have a transmission that I can actually shift ..I think I'm really close to having a bit of fun with it. ....

That is a bargain. If you can actually finish it ready to roll for under $25k you will have got off SUPER CHEAP! It is a whole nother story to just build a nice DE car...but it you ACTUALLY want to build a RACE CAR so that it is competitive in class and certified to race it is RARELY less than that. I guess maybe the Spec Miata guys can get out for under $25k but maybe not if they want to run up front...

Good luck with your project! I love running the race car whenever I can but like you the economy has not been kind to us...

Tom
I made the MISTAKE of tallying up the Widows costs to date......about triple where you are at..& IT DOESN'T RUN!!!!

On the GOOD side....the lemons project-s are coming along really well....the $256 84 automatic runs really well & will be on track in a couple weeks for testing.... The 79 5 speed is in a holding pattern....but is really too nice with a near perfect non runroof no bumpstrip body with decent paint....so it might get a brigther future...

The big cost savings part for me is being able to all the work myself whether it's the engine, body, suspension ...whatever (it helps having a fully equipped shop too ). We've got a few guys locally here who have already built their cars and provide tips and help free of charge too.

I've still got some of the oil control mods that need to be done, but your issues have me wondering what mods are going to work. First one will likely be the accusump..with the hopes of going dry sump down the road..

Tom,

That does make a HUGE difference! I couldn't do ANY of the work myself so that probably more than doubled my costs, heck may have even tripled them!

Good luck on your project! Just like eating an elephant you do it one bite at a time, keep pushing forward and you will finally see the light at the end of the tunnel!

how many licks does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop. I see many people trying to answer this questing and the only real answer is " As much or as little as you want to spend". Thats it.

It also depends on how lucky you are in finding the car with which to start. You could buy a $25000 car and have everything break or a $250 car and have nothing break.

Just curious... if someone was to say, oh I don't know.. put a 500HP 383 SBC transplant into a shark, would it be disqualified from PCA racing? I know it would be okay with some classes of SCCA, just wondering how "Pure" the PCA guys make you stay. I'm sure DE days and Auto X wouldn't be an issue.

Just asking...

$16k-18 if you do it all yourself and start with a decent donor car. This will get you a decent racer.
The nice thing about the S4 is that you have a platform that doesnt need a crazy cage to be stiff enough to race. bolt on some decent stiff suspension, safety stuff, big wheels and tires, headers, exhaust, and do the dual disc conversion and you are good to go after gutting the heck out of it. There really is no more cost associated with a "race car" than the above costs. now, if you were to get someone to do this for you, the cost would double. I've done this 5 times and have ended up with exactly what I expected each time. Im going to keep track of the costs this time around see if it works out the same. Now, this gets you a car that will have near 300rwhp and weight about 3000lbs with driver.

POC and PCA will let you do D E in EXHIBITION class but to race you must have a Porsche engine trans and body shape....plus many many other rules about class.

The thread really should ask,
" What does it cost to weld in a decent cage in addition to the race seat, belts, fire ext, and window net".

There is your answer.

Then, the next questions would be:

"what does it cost to run these types of times at (fill in a track, say Laguna)
1. 1:56 (nothing)
2. 1:50
3 1:46 stock with some minor mods
4 1:42 5 liter 2 valve with headers, decent suspension, big rims,, gutted
5 1:40 stock 5 liter S4 with headers, suspension, big rims and tires, gutted
6 1:38 Holbert car with stroker
7 1:35
8 1:32 andersons set up

This way, you really get the answer you are looking for.
Also, the cost will vary by how much work you can and do by yourself.
So the above chart will have 3 columns. I build everything, somethings or nothing on my own.

Kind of Mark...but my intent was to disclose the cost to build my car..with my stated intended usage... Just to give folks out there a gauge to compare to. Heck, I think Adam with his $500 79 928 track car is gonna be the cost leader..even after the cage and some engine/susp. mods.

As far as running times on various tracks...I think the driver factor weighs heavily in those numbers and is harder to quantify.

Either way...it's only money ...right ?
