SharkTuner announcement – introducing the PEM
We are please to announce a new SharkTuner product ! This is stage one towards a cost reduced SharkTuner Mk 2, but we have made this part of the new product backwards compatible with existing SharkTuner as it offers greatly improved facilities and ease of use.
The name of this new product is the Programmable EPROM Module or “PEM”.
This enables “flash” programming of the 928 LH and EZK ECU’s from MY87 to 95. That is, it allows remapping of the LH and /or EZK ECUs by connecting a laptop to the car’s diagnostic system (via a SharkTuner box) without the need for a ribbon cable to the EPROM socket. It can be repeatedly reprogrammed, and the data is secure even when power is removed from the ECU.
The PEM is a small module that plugs into the normal EPROM socket in the ECU.
Once a PEM is installed in the ECU, the box can then be closed, and the ECU re-installed in the car. No other connections are needed between the SharkTuner and the car other than via the diagnostic connector in order to remap and datalog. You will of course require the usual WBO2 sensor input for remapping the LH ECU.
The other additional advantage is that with a PEM fitted to both LH and EZK, the SharkTuner displays the System monitor, maps and parameters screens for both the ECUs without the need for any further setup. Simultaneous data logging of LH and EZK parameters is also possible !
Once remapping is complete for the session, save the file and then just unplug the SharkTuner, the new remapping parameters are stored in the PEM. No need to blow a new EPROM. The PEM data is secure and the device can be repeatedly reprogrammed.
The next time any tuning is required, the file in the PEM can be uploaded into the SharkTuner and modified as required, or used for datalogging. It is also possible to use the ribbon cable with an EPROM adaptor in one ECU, and a PEM in the other ECU with the existing SharkTuner box.
The special introductory price of a PEM is 95 USD plus postage. There is an additional nominal cost for the updated software of 95 USD. For digi-dash cars a simple modification is required to the 19 way plug lead of the SharkTuner.
We are now hard at work designing the “new” SharkTuner MK2 box. Because the PEM contains additional logic, the SharkTuner interface box can be greatly simplified, and the cost significantly reduced.
When I say “we” I am course mean myself and Niklas. Niklas deserves a huge thank you for his hard work and the donation of his time and expertise. Without him, this project would never have been started !
Also many thanks to Louie Ott who tested the PEMs beyond the call of duty in a 928 and gave accurate and invaluable feedback as usual. He is a true gentleman
The pictures below give some idea of the use of PEMs and the new screen features :

Hi John,
Does this mean I need 2 PEM's plus the updated software or is one sufficiant?

So it's $285 plus postage and I can leave the PEM's installed indefinitely, put the car back together and anytime I want to I just plug the SharkTuner into the 12 pin port and make my changes or monitor performance?

You don't need them, what you have does the biz with the ribbon cable you have.
The PEM's are optional, obviously more conventient, but not essential.
You can fit PEM's to either or both ECU's that you want to tune with that capability.

Nice!!! I dont really care for opening up these brain boxes all the time and leaving stuff exposed....to lets say a small socket that rolls out from under the seat when you decide to brake! Thank gaawd my towel stopped it!
great work guys. The ST'er sounds great on paper but you really have to use it to see the things it can do for you. X2 with what Adam said.

Quick question John... For those with the digital dash experiencing the crazy knock counts, and you advocate diconnecting M25 (IIRC) on CE panel, is this still neccessary? Just curious.

Thanks Tony and Adam ! We hope that tuners will find the PEMs a really useful enhancement of St functionailty.
Andrew, disconnecting M25 is still necessary to prevent corruption of data, plus the mod to the 19way plug when using PEM's.
I have not tested using ST with ribbon cable connection, plus modified 19way but with M25 still connected..... BTW I found the other day digidash K line is green wire on L15 on MY89 cars, M25 on MY 90 and later.
