Default Tire recomendations for a 1987 S4 5 speed?

I just bought some aftermarket 17" wheels and now I need to decide what tires to run. I thought I would ask the ones who know. My S4 has 45K miles on it. I live in East TN where the roads are real twisty and it rareley gets below 40F. My thought was to use a summer performance tire such as Goodyear F1. Wear is not a big concern, my budget is around $800.
Thanks

Wear is not a concern? In those conditions coupled with spirited driving, you could blow thru a set of Mich Pilots in 12K miles.

"... a set of Mich Pilots" and "... my budget is around $800" will probably never appear in the same sentence again.

I love my Pilot PS2's. The only possible justification is the smile factor, coupled with my low annual mileage. If I was putting a set on every year or two from either miles or aggressive driving, I'd have a different tire on there for sure. I look for 25k out of a set, give or take, and close to $1k/set installed cost. I love my Pilot PS2's. I think I mentioned that already though.

I just ordered a set of 225/45ZR17 and 255/40ZR17 Michelin PS2's from Discount Tires installed with road hazard coverage etc for $1100 tax and all. They have a 12 month no-interest deal.

I have a set of Michelin Pilot Sport PS2s on my '87 S4. You can't go wrong.

If the wheels will hold them 275 on rear prevents wheel spinning on take off.

Falken RT-615. I like them more than the S-03 front and PS2 rears they replaced. As a bonus, the cost 2/3 as much. Watch ebay for Discount Tire's sale price (usually 5% off, always free shipping). They were just over $500 for 225/45-17 and 255/40-17.

I always had lots of noise and bad wear from Falkens, but that was 15 years ago since I tried any, maybe they have improved since then (I sold tires back then as well, so I saw it on many cars). When it comes to tires, I would rather spend more $$ to get better rubber, without going crazy. The PS2 is a good tire for the money.

I have Michelin PS2's on my '91GT. It's not a daily driver though. Tread wear is not too bad.

IMHO don't scrimp on tires; they really can make a big difference (both good and bad).

I think you should be able to fit 235/45R17s on front & 275/40R17s on rear.

In these sizes you are looking at well over $1000 in PS2 unmounted (tire rack) so that may not be an option. Goodyear Eagle F1's would be just under $800 before shipping & mounting...

While Kumho Ecsta MX would get you easily under $800 all in

All these seem to be well liked and compare favorably.. you may get what you pay for... but it costs a lot for the last little bit of extra performance. Tell us what the wheel sizes are in detail - offsets & widths?

I like my Dunlops. Nice tire for the price. Michelin's are expensive, but worth it, especially if you want to DE you car ever. Also had Bridgestone's RE750's, very good tire.

Agreed ... 18-inch PS2's are about $2k. I recently bought a set of Kumhos which cost the same as BF Goodriches, total $900. I am very happy with the Kumho's and Shane likes his BF Goodriches I believe.

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS D3's. Quiet, stick like glue in wet and dry and look great with the linear tread design. They should come in around your price range. G
