Default 83 928S sitting at the end of the block

I mistakenly put this explantion at the end of another thread so I thought I'd start another thread with this as the subject rather than a PS at the end of someone else's.

928S sitting at the end of the block

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Gents; I'm a 930S and 996TT guy...don't know squat about a 928, but some guy dropped off an 83 928S at his mother's and took off leaving it for her to dispose of.

The car has 145K on it, it's a five speed, I'm helping her by charging up the battery and told her I'd try to help her out by throwing the info up on the 928 boards. I tried to start it, but it's sat there for so long, it wouldn't start and I could smell gas so I quit, but the son drove it here, so it was running a month or more ago. Like I say, I dont know much about a 928, but it's got good tires, brand new battery....exterior is brown and so is the interior...Driver's seat has a tear in it....he's got a sign of $5K on it, but I'd bet that if someone offered $3K his mom would love to get it out from in front of her house before the neighbors complain and the local gendarmes tow it and she's stuck with the tow bill.

Steve Kuhl...If you're lurking on the forum, you're a 928 guy...and you live near here...maybe you could come look at it and tell the folks what sort of shape it's in. Juan...you too...any of you guys fromt he Rubio's Tuesday Taco crowd might pick this thing up cheap as a fixer-upper or for parts....

I don't frequent this board very often if at all, but I'll check it over the next week or so. As I said, I'm doing this for the elderly lady up the street...I have no personal interest or get nothing from this...it's a favor to her....and me kuz I'm tired of seeing it sitting there. The car is in Elk Grove, CA, 95758

Chuck

Where's the hood release....sorry to sound like a dumb****....but I looked under the dash and couldn't find it. I figured I'd squirt some ether in there to get it running, or the gas has leaked down from sitting so long. Thanx for the helpful hint....

Is an 83 928S anything that someone would want? I told her that if it didn't sell within a reasonable period of time, she could scrap it out.

The hood release is in the driver's footwell, immediately inside the door.

Keeping in mind that I'm still fairly new to the 928 scene, I see *most* decent 928's being sold.

You might want to grab the VIN number and possibly the option codes if at all possible... decode them, them post the results here.

Decode them both using the following wesbite:
http://www.928s4vr.com/codes.htm

or the following program [selfish plug]
http://code.google.com/p/928codes/downloads/list

Leidel: I'll be sure to do that....good idea and thanx for the suggestion. I'll go look for the options sticker tomorrow....I imagine it's under the front hood where most of them are?

What is an 83 928S worth? I'm not asking for any reason other than strict curiosity....the lady up the street is serious about wanting it out of there....and I sure don't need another car no matter how good a deal it might be.

Chuck, this is a front engine car. There's an engine under the front hood (just kidding ya )

If this car has one, an options sheet will be in the back in the hatch area under the carpet. Not sure they were doing that in '83 yet; my '79 doesn't have it.

Truly thanks guys...I'm out of my element on this car....don't know where anything is....but bronto....I DID figure out the engine was in the front.....only kuz when I opened the back hatch, the battery was there and no engine....a process of logic then kicked in and I figured that either someone stole the engine or it was up front. ........but I haven't seen it yet....so maybe it's not there which is why it won't start.

I love 928s but 928s are money pits.

If this isn't a Euro S, then it might only be worth $5k if in very good condition.
A Euro S has 300hp, so is worth more.
5 speed is more desirable, but you may find bad synchros once you get it running.
With significant issues (not running), it might be a $1k parts car to the right person.

The issue is that it could easily cost several thousand to get it running "ok", and then it still might not be a $5k car.

Did I mention I love 928s, but they are money pits?

Just my opinion.

Default Track car, needs HP

So this guy signed the title over to her? Big of him. Point is, where is the title? Whoever sells it should take a commission. Re no-start: Even in CA, sitting outside is not good. Could be a ground problem or a weak batt. $3K might be generous for this orphan w/no history.

Anywhere from free to $30k+ for that mythical 500-mile perfect original. Good luck finding that one, although James got close. Typically they are $1000 and less for a parts car that doesn't run, $2500 for a tired car that runs but needs everything, up to $6-7k for a really nice auto with some history. A 5-speed and full records will add a significant premium to that. I'll wager it's definitely worth something more than scrap, which would be about $300.

Thanks guys for the info. I charged the battery for her last nite, and I'll get the option codes off it and post them....if I can find the sticker with the codes on it. I'll also find out where the title is...I would assume with his mother othrwise it would be a hassle to sell.

I know it runs, so I'll get it started and drive it and report back with as much info as I can gather so someone can assess this thing a bit better. I'll also see if I can run down some history.

Thanks again for the responses. Chuck
