Default porsch mechanics

i talked to two porsche mechanics, one has his own shop working with only porsche, and one from a dealer, they both said i gota be crazy to even think about a 928 because the upkeep will drain your soul, and not too mention money, is it really worth it to spend all this money on a car ,and then your scared to death to drive it, cause somethings gona go wrong, so i gota ask whats the fascination?

Can you turn a wrench??? If so do the work yourself. If you can do that these cars are NO problem considering the smiles per mile return

[QUOTE=sidehatch;5822270]igota be crazy to even think about a 928 because the upkeep will drain your soul, and not too mention money, QUOTE]

That there is wisdom.

But it isn't always true. Those that are not scared to drive their cars tend to have all the luck. Funny thing really. I've been fairly lucky. Others have been extremely lucky.

A car that is frequently driven, and in a spirited manner keeps both the car and the owner happy. $1,500/year budget for upkeep is not so horriffic.

If you buy an old bucket of bolts, you are looking at a lot of $$$ and woe. Occasionally people here find bargains that turn out to be true bargains. That is the exception.

I bought my 928 in 1995. I have taken it to the track almost 4 dozen times. My mechanical issues have been rather insignificant in the grand scheme of things. The car still pulls hard. How many other cars would have needed a rebuild by now?

All that said, my luck is probably about to run out.

Find a great car that's been taken care of properly, and hasn't been buggered up with modifications, and most likely you'll only have to pay for regular scheduled maintenance, much of which you should be able to do yourself.

Afraid to drive it?? Heaven forfend!

This is our daily driver....

As for mods.... Hubby takes this one out and beats the snot out of it almost every day. It sat for ten years until this past March, and now it's supercharged 6 months later.

As for the fascination....well, a car that can do 160+ miles per hour has a major addiciton factor. What can we say?

(First test run after supercharging...still needed some work. The dyno operator got nervous approaching a 160 mph because he was worried the tires were going to blow. But he said it definitely had a lot more to go. )

(Yeah, the air/fuel sucked...wtf...first time out. It's better now.)

These cars will take you anywhere you want to go, comfortably, and are damn reliable if maintained properly. And even if not, sometimes.

We gave up our Durango ultimately...these are so much fun to drive, it just sat for 2 years. No point keeping the big lug around anymore.

1) Great car. If taken care of, can live far longer than most car. Aluminum doesn't rust.

2) Confort and handling, it's a porsche after all.

3) Other's faces when they see it. Priceless.

4) A porsche... But at such a small price? Mine cost me 6600$... Even a new Sentra cost more than that.

Not THAT expensive...

I'll make my usual recommendation to this general argument. You would look very good in a Miata sir.

Obviously these mechanics don't know 928's.

As others have said, get one that's been maintained and ownership will be a pleasure. Buy a basket case and I guarantee you will be complaining constantly about how much these cars are a headache. Nice sharks are out there and usually the owners know they're nice so you're never going to geat a killer deal, but then again it's a Porsche and if you're after a killer deal then you're looking at the wrong marque.

Same goes for any other high end sports car.
