MMounts and Pan Gasket-Done!

Interesting thoughts Ryan...........I'm struggling with the same decision.
I did the intake last year and the MMs a few years back all with the engine in situ. Now I'm looking at the valve cover gskts, cam chains and tensioners, WP and OPG projects I'm considering the engine pull which shall allow other 'clean up' projects.

with the engine out you can really scrub he hell out of the engine bay. Fix PS leaks, clean up the cross member and all the suspension.
With the engine out I guess i would basically tear it down and refresh the entire thing. Depending on mileage i may do rings and bearings again, as well as having the valves and seats cut and refreshing the heads as well.
The timing belt job is simple with the engine out, same for the intake and pan gasket, its all JUST THERE waiting to be unscrewed.
I think I could pull an engine alone in under 6 hours going at a slow pace. I think with an extra set of hands you have it out in 4 hours if not less honestly. There really isnt much to it. If you have a to do list of many things on the engine, then i think it really is the best way to go. Order up ALL your parts, get the complete gasket set instead of buying that crap individually, throw in a new tensioner, and oil hoses and have the car down for a week. Mostly due to time spent having the heads refreshed (if you decide to do that) and the cam covers and intake blasted and then painted.
I think its the way i will go on my next 928 GT.
Then when you reinstall everything, you have such a nice place to work anytime you need to go back in and do an oil change, or change plugs or flush coolant or what i was doing was jacking hte car up just to take a look at the nice clean car, I do miss working on such a clean car as the GT became. It is quite pleasurable to work on.

The mounts are then just replaces by walking into the now empty engine bay and putting them in. Its really quite simple. The cross member stays put, you dont touch the lower control arms at all.

How do you release the motor mounts with the engine and cross member in place?
This will be the decision factor of R&R the engine or not.............I hated doing the MMs with the engine in place.

The only real things holding the engine in, are the 4 bolts that go into the block girdle, and the 4 bolts attaching the bellhousing to the block.
very simple, those 4 bolts are easy to access from below the car.

Malcom, if you're considering refreshing the mounts WYAIT, you will have to drop the rack at some point but as Ryan states it's not necessary if you just want to lift the engine out. With the MMs being so cheap now for later cars I'd toss a new set in just because it's hard to get to.

Ryan.........as simple as you make it I'm going for engine out.
Dave.........the MMs are new as of 3 yrs ago but while I'm in there I may go with the solids; thx all.

And it is so much easier to work on the engine when its on a stand.
then you can be ultra **** about things and really clean the block up and make it look very nice and pretty!

We joked the other night that we could have the engine out in the same amount of time and get everything done then. If I didn't have most everything done on mine except the mounts/pan gasket, that is the way to go.

Ryan,
I think that's the way to go. If you carve out enough time you can do it all! TBWP, Top End Refresh, Powdercoating intake n cam covers, clean the WHOLE engine, engine compartment, mmounts, etc. Slippery sloap for sure though as you could be at its for weeks! But you could really knock out everything in one big swoop!
As clean as the GTS is up top, wheel wells etc, the bottom of the motor, suspension, etc, was an oilly mess! I still need to replace the oil cooler, o-rings, and potentially the lines, otherwise all the cleaning Sean and I did will turn to **** again.
Sean, with as many people who are volunteering to wrench on your car, I think we should do it over at Brad's shop. We pull the motor and getter done!

Don't need to pull mine though Chuck. Nothing else needs to be done on it except the rear/front main seals, but they are not leaking .
