Default Weird Turn Signal Behavior

I turn into the drive, put it in park, pull the handbrake, turn the light off and remove the key. The warning bell keeps going off telling the light are still on. I turn the light switch but it full left. I'm looking and looking and find that my left turn signal is still on. Not blinking but on. With the ignition completely off and the key removed, I center the turn stalk and the bell goes off. Is this normal?

This is a common feature for european models. Both the 944 and 928 have the lights wired in this manner. While I lived in europe all the cars I owned did it as well.

It is to light the Parking Lights on the side of the car away from the curb.

But after the car is off? I guess I should read that little book in the glove compartment that say Owner's Manual.

I don't have the stupid "ding ding ding", but that switch is supposed to light the parking lights on one side of the car with the key out. For dark alleys or something like that. We all park in dark alleys on a regular basis, right?

Given the dark alleys etc .. it really wouldn't make sense to have to leave the keys in it too... right?

my headlights pop up whenever a hottie crosses the street in a crosswalk in front of my shark. don't know why, but it must be a feature of some kind... maybe it's a male shark?

Right, Alan.

I just re-read the OP. It keeps "dinging" with the key out and the stalk not in the center position? That doesn't sound right. Unless it only does it while the door is open, which would make sense but I am not sure exactly how it is supposed to behave.

Yeah, the ignition off, key removed, lights off, turn stalk not centered, door open then we get Ding, Ding, Ding.

Is the damn ding defunct once you close the door?

I center the stalk and it stops. If I close the door the ding stops but it doesn't fix the fact that the parking light is on.

That's the way it's supposed to work -- see the last paragraph on this page from the '78 owner's manual. If it kept dinging with the door closed, that would be a problem.

[Edit]I see that the member websites are acting up again. Attaching the image to make sure the damn thing shows up. [/Edit]

Yes on the later models the chime is activated when the door is open and either: the keys are left in the ignition, the marker lights are on or the parking lights are activated on either side.

The warning is for current draw and security issues.

They're called parking lights for a reason

You can leave those side lights on, to help other drivers avoid driving into the side of your car.

If you've driven down the narrow countryside lanes you get all over Europe, you'll understand why this is actually a good thing to do sometimes
