Driving to SITM tomorrow, and noticed my rear axle boot is ripped on the passenger side. Grease is still in there and the car is driving fine. Is it ok to make the trip?

Maybe my car could be used at a tech session down there.

It will get road dirt in it(depending on how much dirt you encounter). It's harder to clean the outer joint than it is to clean the inner joint, and I would recommend taking care of it before any long trip. Having said that though, chances are that ignoring it is not likely to lead to catastrophic failure right away.

I just noticed that mine is torn as well. (Same location, too). I'll be making the trip anyway. Might improvise with some duct tape.

If you want, we could probably both do the job @ SITM. You buy the boots and I'll bring the tools and do the labor That's assuming that there's an acceptable place to work.

You might want to ask Dave to bring a BF breaker bar and a BF torque wrench for the axle nut...

There are some short-term "solutions" disguised as split boots. Don't know if there any for the 928 though. Using them, you cut the two bands off the old boot and finish off the boot so you can get it off without removing the axle. Now one wraps around andscrews two halves together with a few globs of new grease. That will likely get you there and back. Get the real boots from DR while you are there, and just do all four when you get back.

You Might be able to check with the local auto pars store, they use to carry a "zip" or lace on boot where you do not have to remoove the axle. May give you a better pice of mind.

I have had some success in the past with some customers who "were selling the car" and didn't want to put alot of money in it by cleaning the boot with brake cleaner and the edges of the tear,and using red silicone in the tear and feathering it out and letting it cure.Six to eight months later when they come back for service because the "deal fell through" the patch was still there.

You might be suprised at how many of ours are torn/split and driven all the time. One guy I can think of right away has had split boots for 2 years, doesn't want to pay for replacing them "yet". No noise or clicks out of them yet.

This guy is not me.

That being said, the worst one to replace is that outer one, because you can't just buy the CV joint, it comes as the axle and you can add the old CV on the other end.

Thanks, guys. Ben Allison is going to bring some tools and DR has the boots, so if we get some time we may try to do a couple of these.

You'll be fine. Davek9 drove with his split for 2 years - including to SITM last year. I'm surprised we didn't catch that when we were working on it. See you tomorrow.
