Euro S2 engine parts - Still some demand?
Well I thought it's about time I thought about moving on the salveagable parts left over from my TBF engine
Engine was a 310hp 1985 Euro S2 4.7, and still a strong runner despite a none existant wear surface on the thrust bearing and 1.4mm endplay.
I have the following:
Pistons and rods
Heads complete
Camshafts still in towers with lifters etc
Full intake system excluding maf
Twin distributor
Obviously the oil passages in the heads and lifters would need cleaning. The heads were rebuilt in the past, although I don't know exactly what was done. The mating surface looks good.
Would there be any interest over the pond for any of this lot?
I did get a quote for shipping 70Kg (155lbs) to the West coast, and it was just over $310 at todays exchange rate. I'd need to make a crate for shipping too.
If anybody is interested i'll get it all out of storage and take some pics.

Yes... so I guess there is still demand!
Engine had ~150,000 on it, but I checked the paperwork and the heads came off the car and were gone through in the year 2000 and 20,000 ago.
I don't have the MAF for the intake - the replacement engine didnt come with one.
I had better pull the cams out of the towers and check them for damage before we go any further.
From memory, the pistons are group 1, but again i'll check later. Are euro pistons different to those fitted in US 4.7 engines?
Will go to where It all in storage and bring it all back home for closer inspection and pictures.

The pistons are different, the 10.4 pistons have a very shallow dish, the 10.0 have no dish but deep pockets, U.S version are different again. You may be able to put new bearings in that engine, just!

Engine had Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic 15w50 in my ownership, and before that 5w40 full synthetic from the Audi dealer according to my records.
Engine was too far gone just for new bearings, crank was heavily grooved on the thrust bearing face, and the block was cracked around the girdles.
The engine was an S2, so must be 10.4 pistons.

You will find it best to sell everything as a package deal, splitting it up will mean you are left with left over pieces which are hard to sell.
Plus list an asking price.
I would start with todays market between $1500-$2000 for the lot. This will essentially let someone build their own Euro motor with just using an 4.7L US block.

Thanks for the advice, The asking price was puzzling me... I was looking through a 928 parts retailers website for comparison, but I ran out of patience at $3200 odd before i'd factored in any of the intake stuff.

Thanks Ben for letting us know, so that engine is another victim of a thin synthetic oil which is probably low on the anti pressure additives like ZDDP. It is a shame but there is a lack of knowledge out there that is destroying these engines.

I was under the impression TBF was due to a mechanical design flaw, not lubrication issues.

I went down to pick all the stuff up earlier, and brought it back to take some pics.

I popped the cams out of the towers and took some close ups, and also took some close pics of the head surface.
I did notice two slight pits in one head surface, and one in the other. Both pits are out of the metal sealing ring area of the gasket, so you could either JB weld the pits or get a welder to fill them up before you surface them.
One of the exhaust studs came out as I took off the manifold, but the thread is fine into the head, and also somebody has stripped out one of the exhaust studs and installed an oversize M10 stud instead of M8.
Like I said, the engine was a strong runner before I pulled the sump off revealing the dreaded TBF. I only pulled off the oil pan to change the gasket. The engine used no coolant, and only minimal oil. Most oil appeared to end up in the intake!
I didn't take too many pics of the intake, but it looks like any other Also, I didn't weigh all the bits together yet, so I can't confirm exactly what the shipping over the pond is likely to cost, but I doubt its over 70Kg.
