Ive said it 100 times. All they need to do is hook up the GPS sensor to the text keyboard. Anything above a registered speed of 5 MPH(faster than a walk) lets say the texting becomes INOP...your message is stored and can not be sent until you slow down/stop again.
.
What about the passenegers you say? Well, you wouldnt let your passenger drink a beer while driving right!!?!? no texting in a moving car period...it distracts every one. They can even use the idea to imobilze the talk feature unless a handsfree device is present.

Im with you 100% It needs to be illegal and all hands free with steep fines involved. With all the shortages in "county/state revenue" these days it would be a great source of income!

Tony, I agree that there is no excuse for texting while driving, or for passengers to distract the driver by texting. IMHO the one flaw in your suggestion is that it would prevent texting on busses and trains. Same for the handsfree idea. I don't do much texting myself, maybe 5-10 messages per month, so it wouldn't affect me either way.

I agree 100% that something needs to be done, but it's not obvious how to do it. Most phones that are in use do not have GPS, and GPS can be shut off in any case. Strict enforcement, maybe loss of license for a month, etc. would be fine with me.

Maybe people who text while driving should have a live video on their next flight of the pilots doing the same I bet that would instantly dispell the "I didn't know it was dangerous" BS.

There are alot of things that people do while driving that is dangerous. I personally think smoking while driving is as dangerous as texting.... Ever seen a cherry fall into someones lap on the freeway??? Plus it ruins interiors!

What about eating? Holding a coffee in one hand and a burger in the other? Steering with your knees? Shifting with your left hand?

Sex while driving? TAKE IT IF YOU CAN GET IT!!!!

I'm ok with imposing large penalties for texting while driving. Texting while riding, however is another story... My kids text while we are driving. I like it. Makes for a quiet, peaceful trip....

Ok. Now, THAT's damn funny.

Man points awarded for admitting your mistake. Cancels the negative points for recognizing the music track (without the music-video track. )

I've kind of wondered why cell phones specifically get so much publicity for this, as opposed to all of the things that people do in general while driving.

Locally, a woman in an SUV ran into and killed a motorcyclist that was stopped at a red traffic light. She was putting on nail polish while driving when it happened. I remember reading about another woman in an SUV that caused an accident that killed a couple of people when she spilled the bowl of cereal she was eating in her lap while driving.

There's a pretty long list of things that people do while driving that are at least as dangerous as talking on a cell phone in my opinion. Cell phone or texting specific laws aren't going to cover those.

Here is what happens where I live...."In Orange County, California, a judge has ordered the Costa Mesa driver accused of fatally striking a Newport Beach pedestrian last year while text messaging on his cell phone to stand trial for vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence. If convicted, Martin Burt Kuehl faces a maximum 9-year prison sentences....." That was a bad day for BOTH of them !

Yes! Sorry, but that is exactly what he deserves.

People have been eating, drinking, and getting road head for decades without a perceived major problem. Cell phones are relatively new and texting is very new so it is easy to claim that they are responsible for the perceived increase in accidents. The funny thing is that there are more cars and more drivers out there now, and the number of deaths per year has not significantly changed. It has been in the low 40,000 range for years. Sure, there seem to be more minor accidents (caused by stupid people and red light cameras) but it's not like cell phones are causing a significant change in the major accident rate. I think it's mostly just activists and politicians needing something to do to make themselves look good or feel important.

IMHO the difference between eating while driving, getting road head, etc. vs cell phone use is that the cell phone tends to make people transport themselves mentally to where the other person is. Studies have shown this, and while the other activities mentioned may be dangerous the difference is that with cell phones the person is quite literally "not there".

Also there is the anecdotal evidence... Most of the time, when we see someone doing something extraordinarily stupid, they have a phone to their ear.
