Default Coolant temperature check

Hello,

I've just finished the timing belt job on my S4 and I've also replaced the thermostat suspecting the old one was a bit cold. The old one is a 74 degrees (I suspect not original) and the new one is an 83 degrees.

The temperature gauge is obviously showing a higher value but I just want to make sure it is OK. I drove around the block a few time in 1st gear and the temperature stayed steady as per attached pictures.

Is it the proper reading for an S4?

Thanks.

Michel.

By doing some interpolating and taking into account the parallax, it looks like you're running at 88oC. (190oF), which is where my GT runs. Looks fine to me, though a gauge with only 2 numbers on it would make me want to get an IR gun thermometer and shoot the temperature on the upper radiator hose when the car's up to temp. Much more accurate, and the gun lets you measure the temperature drop across the radiator, which lets you know it's doing its job.

Salut Michel,
That's exactly what I get on mine at idle when warm.

It is not high (under 200f) So... drive it hard!
+1 on taking a gun reading just to be safe.

Thanks for the IR advice. I wanted to know if it looks odd or just fine. Based on your input...the car is fit to drive! Thanks.

Michel.

System is self bleeding for trapped air but did you 'burp' the hoses, leave the cap off reservoir as engine warmed up etc etc?

Yes, this is exactly like mine, you suspect it is running hot because the needle is not centered.
When the shark climbs the mountains it gets even hotter.

After changing a perfectly good working thermostat for a new one the temperature is more stable, but may still struggle to reach full temp (as in the picture above) on a cold day when driving too slow.

Reminds me, I should also check with a termometer to verify the actual temperature, thanks for the tip.
