Blowing Oil and Dip Stick Out of Engine

1982 928 Euro S

About a year or two ago I was driving home from a barn fire at night. I was going sorta fast and when I got home, I saw I had oil on my windshield. In the morning I found that my dip stick blew out and had shot oil everywhere. My father just assumed last time I checked the oil I didn't put the dip stick in all the way and it fell out.

We bought another replacement dipstick from a German Auto parts dealer, but it wasn't the correct one. I used it for a while, but we just bought a correct dip stick. My dad put it in while I was off at college. I go to jump my car from underneath the hood (Starter problems currently) and I notice there is oil everywhere and the dipstick is barely in.

My father now thinks there may be a reason its blowing out, but is unsure of the reason. He has suggested a few things to me, that go straight over my very little amount of car knowledge head. Do you guys have any idea of possible causes?

Sounds like blowby, meaning the engine is worn. A compression and leak down test will confirm this. The compression test should give even readings on all 8 cylinders, within a couple of PSI of each other. The leakdown test will tell you where you are losing compression, probably the rings in your case. Most likely you have an engine rebuild or an engine swap in your future. Joe

I had a similar situation with a 1964 Chevrolet I bought in Oklahoma a long time ago. It was blowing oil out all over the engine when I was driving it back to Colrado. It was coming out of the filler as I recall. I took the car to someone and they said the exhaust gas recirculation valve was clogged up. He replaced it and no further problem.

I don't know how the 928 engine recirculates the crankcase gas, but some recent posts suggests that there is a similar set-up. Figure that out and see what it takes to clean that system out and I suspect your problem will be solved. It might be, however, that that system is clogged up because of blow-by from worn rings as previously suggested, but I have my doubts unless you car has an awful lot of miles.

The dipstick doesn't fit tightly enough. Use some zip-ties to hold it in.

Look for oil consumption or blue smoke on hard acceleration before worrying about anything serious.

I would do a compression-leakdown test to make sure the rings are still good.... "if" they are then make sure you get a correct dipstick that fits with enough tension...I've found many early style dipsticks are far too loose

My truck would push the dipstick out when it had four cracked pistons, but only at WOT.

I've done that in my truck on a really cold morning when I stepped on it and the crankscase vent hose was kinked.

I doubt it is a collapsed vent hose, but is possible.

I concure that a leakdown test would be best.

I had to get a new rubber for my 80 a while back. There was nothing wrong with the engine. I might have gotten a whole dipstick, it really was a while back.

Both of my 928's do this because the O-Ring on the dipstick is so worn out (add that to the "must buy" list...)

Leakdown / compression is spot on for both engines.

Jean-Louis came up with a slick spring hold down for his track car since it kept popping out.
