Default New Cayman S

The below is all fictional of course.

So there I was, getting on the highway on-ramp right behind a brand-new Cayman S. "Ha" I thought to myself, this should be funny. Got on the highway going about 65 and saw him nail it from the momentary cloud of black smoke from his tailpipes. "I'll stay in 4th, he can't be that fast" I thought to myself. Boy, was I wrong. Pull to the fast lane to his left and am only slightly gaining on him. 4k RPM... 5k RPM, I don't see any drop-back from him shifting *at all*, WTF? Still gaining just slightly, 6k RPM, 6.5k, now my nose is just past the back of his front door. Then he had to shut it down because a car was coming up fast and he did not have the space to get in front of me (like maybe he thought he would). So I probably gained just over 1 car length on him just as I had to shift to 5th.

So later I looked up the specs, it was probably a PDK 7-speed version that does the 1/4 mile in under 13s. 320hp and 3,000lbs, damn I underestimated this one. Very nice little car. I should have started out in 3rd...

We had one on the dyno at OCIC and every run it made 300hp. I'd like to have one of those.

I'd also like to drive one with the PDK....since it is the same tranny as my M3 runs (built by getrag relabeled by BMW & Porsche) It must be fun to drive.....

Face it. You got beaten by a Cockster (ode to Jeremy Clarkson).

BTW - The PDK makes the car so much more flexible. It feels faster than the manual trans.

Beaten would be him pulling on me and getting in front of me like he planned...

If I was going to buy a new Porsche it would be a Cayman S.

To bad the the powers that be are doing the same thing with the Cayman that they did with the 928, IE "We can not let it be faster or quicker than the 911"

I also bet the Cayman owner was going WTF when you were gaining on him.

Greg,

You are exactly right and it is very unfortunate! The Cayman with a Carrera S engine would be UNREAL FAST!

Ditto on point 1. In fact, once my ultra-low-mileage '89GT GT and a 2009 CPO Cayman S PDK (in Cardamon Red with tan interior and full leather) get within $5k - 10k of each other, I nay have a hard time not putting Great White up for sale the highest bidder.

Point 2 - You've set your sights too high! It's enough that Porsche let it get every bit as fast as the 911 for a much-lower price (see Car & Driver's most recent "Lightning Lap" article... they tried like hell to get the 911 to beat the Cayman S's lap time, but could not).

Those cars are stinking fast on the track with a good driver.

TPC makes a Cayman turbo kit, which should write an interesting second chapter to this encounter...

I would have that car with the PDK, and I wouldn't think twice about it. I'd have a new Boxster with the Spyder suspension as well. I hear it is the best setup they ever developed for that platform.

So, yeah, that IS what it would take for me to trade up. I'm not sure I could do it though. It would be like selling the dog.

I used to have (sob) one of those - 6spd with a beautiful cocoa leather interior. Brilliant car. Bought a 928 cuz, believe it or not, has much of the same balance. All the parts are in different places (and, you can actually wrench on a 928), but the balance is there. I miss it terribly (had it for about 1 year) but love the 928 with room for my kid in the back and a little vintage flavor. Love it.

I've had those thoughts too. However, I've realized that there is another absolutely necessary expense: the PWIS-II (or whatever Porsche's calling its diagnostic computer these days) as I very much doubt you can do any worthwhile work on these water-cooled flat six beasties without it. (I also assume that Blown87 is going to suggest a way around that... )

Car & Driver's most recent "Lightning Lap" article... they tried like hell to get the 911 to beat the Cayman S's lap time, but could not).
I was going to quote that article as well.

Next, take a look at the times for the Audi TTS. A similarly optioned Cayman (not an S) with the same 265 HP will set you back about 15% more than the Audi. An S would be ~30% more. The TTS is three seconds slower than the Cayman S on a 3 minute lap. Bang for the buck and a nicer interior than the Cayman IMO. And ALL bets are off if the 340hp TTRS makes it to the states. It should be priced under the Cayman S. (Sorry for the TT plug, wasn't really my point...)

I had an '08 TT 3.2 (250 hp VR6) for a week as a loaner (wives, btw, are very good at getting nice loaner cars for you...) with the DSG box - which is the "original" so-to-speak PDK.

One thing about the DSG - and I assume also the PDK - is that the gears (or final drive) are WAY short. At idle in first gear the car will happily roll along smoothy at about 3mph. Second is like 6mph. My GTs' minimum speed in 1st gear is about 8mph. The Audi DSG cars - and I assume the PDK p-cars - are wicked fast while those short gears have legs. So, to not run out of legs, they have 7 gears. Nice.

My suspicion is that the DSG/PDK needs a super-short first gear for all of the funky software-controlled automagic clutches to work all the time every time without spilling the martini the driver's holding.

How much would you estimate (or do you know) your car weighs?

Thats why someday I would like to have a 997TT with PDK 11.0seconds in the 1/4 and 0-100 in 6.8seconds.With alittle flash to the computer they would be high 10 second street car and with all wheel drive no worry about traction.
Maybe in 5 years when they are used.PDK shifts so quick and with 5,000rpm launches off the line from a start has to be even more fun lol.
