For mockup you can capture one of the existing screwholes and torque it down tight, but pretty much you're going to be punching new holes somehow or other. It didn't bother me much because I'm going through a complete overhaul of the interior with colorchange, so those holes are going to be history anyway.

My plan is to go with a 4" Infinity Reference two-way setup, which will save me having the crossovers stuffed in the doors somewhere, and patch the holes up. The ideal option I saw, was one that I think Sterling did with his, where he reformed the front bottom of his doors to fit a 6 1/2" or so. With a 6 1/2" woofer near your feet and a small tweeter mounted higher, like on the A pillar, you could eliminate the speaker holes at the front of the door entirely, and have better quality sound. Unfortunately I have too many car projects to make a serious run at something like that.

And I haven't tested yet, but with the 300W amplifier driving 4" speakers in the doors and whatever fits behind the driver's seats, and a nice 300W mono amplifier driving a 12" subwoofer behind the driver's seat, I don't think I'll miss the extra speakers.

My idea is to use all of the existing holes with extenders so there is no damage to the existing interior.

Also, the rear pillar extender will allow for a true subwoofer.

The "protrusion" beyond the existing surfaces is really only noticeable on the doors.

This is a work in progress to allow a Kicker subwoofer in the stock 6.5" speaker hole with the only change being the extension of the grill 1" into the cabin.

I'm sure you're already looking into this and measuring, but the issue I had was that on the speakers I tried (5 1/4" into a 4" space) the basket was wide enough to prevent using the stock holes. If you have access to a mill, then you might get around that by creating a lip on the inside to capture the factory screwholes. So that it looks like the top part of this } with the inner point screwing to the car and the top screwing to the speaker.

I am using a JL Audio 5.25" and the magnet portion fits into the stock cut out hole. The extender allows for the extra depth and width required for the rest of the speaker.

This rendering is of the rear woofer speaker extender.

Is this what you are referring to as a lip ?

Thanks for your input !!!!

How is progress?
Have you tested them yet?

Always nice to have someone else waste money and effort if it doesn't work..

I am looking for new woofers as well, and found the same Kicker CVT65 to be the most suitable.
I was hoping it would fit in the existing hole, without extension.
According to your saying it does not.

This will work only if the compartment behind the woofer is large enough and properly acoustically sealed.
If the volume in the rear quarter is too large it does not really matter with this unit, there should be bass as this woofer has a very large Q (low damping).
If, however, the floppy rear quarter panel does not provide sufficient mechanical stability and seal between rear chamber and the cabin, then no speaker will be able to produce bass here.

These woofers have speccs for mounting in a sealed compartment not too small, but have fairly small max linear extension, meaning they may not be able to produce high sound levels at low frequencies.
We must then keep in mind that a car is a very small listening room, and it does not need much in the lower frequencies to make decent sound pressure levels.

I may try to do some measurements of this rear quarter compartment.
I will try to determine whether the compartment is sealed, and if it has an acoustically finite colume.
