I just switched to Royal Purple 10W40. The car has responded to it very well.

Roger from 928's R Us said he installs it in his customers's cars and his own. He runs 20W50, though.

Kidding aside, I've not had good experience with Royal Purple. On a hot day I lost significant oil pressure. It was scary to see 3 bar at 4k RPM. Mobil 1 (15w-50) has also had similar breakdown, but not nearly as sever. Still kept slightly above the 1 bar per 1k RPM standard.

The key is themal integrity and ZDDP. There are only a handful of oils that have both of these. Mobil1 15w-50, Redline 20w-50, Valvoline VR1 (synthetic or conventional) 20w-50, Amsoil 20w-50, and Brad Penn 20w-50 . I think I will switch to Valvoline VR1 next oil change - to see if it holds up better than the Mobil 1, and becasue it it more readily available than Amsoil and Redline.

Final note, don't use the synthetic blends. You don't know if it's 1% synthetic or 99% or somewhere between. If you want to go with conventional, I think Valvoline VR1 is the only conventional oil (that I know of off hand) with elevated ZDDP levels that our cars need.

[edit:] Just noticed Brad Penn is a blend. Don't have any experience with it, but I think Hacker is using it in his car.

The VR1 is what I am using, in 20W50 and I always use BG MOA on every oil change.

Was thinking of using Brad Penn next oil change on the '84 becauuse it was a blend. My engine bleeds synthetics.

You've heard of viscosity breakdown, right? I forget which oil co. has made that their moniker, but that's what I'm talking about. When the oil gets really really hot, it can begin to breakdown and loose viscosity - i.e. it gets thin. When the oil gets thin, it flows through the bearing and passages too fast to provide the protection the engine needs. The indication that this is happening is that oil pressure tends to drop. The more it breaks down, the more the pressure drop. This can be a bad thing. So you want an oil that can maintain viscosity at high temps.

If it's bleeding, it probably needs new gaskets. It's true that the synthetic oil molecules are more uniform in size and as such have a tendency to seep through small passages that conventional oil may tend to plug up, but the real fix is to replace the seals of the "bleeding" parts.

I tried Vasoline VR1 in my 944 Turbo and it turned to consistency of water pretty quickly.

Another vote for Brad Penn 20/50... I use it in my 911 3.2 as well.

That is strange, was it fuel diluted or what?
How many miles?
