Default 89 automatic rebuild needed soon.

I can tell that I may not get another season out of my trans unless I through a kit in it.
Will I need to go to a benz dealer to get a rebuild kit. (seals, gaskets, steel and fiber plates)

Have you changed the filter and fluids yet?

Brad, what driving symptoms are you having to make you think that the transmission is failing?

Oh its getting soft on the 2-3 shift so I am backing off the throttle now when it is time to go to 3rd.

I have been a NA dealer mechanic for 20 years and have rebuild hundreds of transmissions so I am not worried about tearing into it even though it will be my first MB trans.
At one dealer where I was their trans man I must have done at least 50 a year.
It would be nice to have a rebuild manual but when in the city next I may stop by the Benz dealer, slip into the back and talk to their trans guy about ordering the correct kit and manual and about doing any mods that he knows about.

It sure would be nice to use a different torque convertor with a lock up to gain some top end and drop the rpm 2 or 3 hundred.

Brad, if it 'flares' when changing up might that simply be a matter of adjustment of the, well, adjuster, on the side of the trasnmission?

Well this is also why I posted here is because I would hate to strip it down and find the clutch packs fine, knowing that I just wasted money by having to reseal it when it could just be something simple.
1st and 2nd shift hard.
When I put it in low, it goes into 1st when I slow to a crawl. nail it, she lights up and goes to 2nd around 6000, if I run it to 6000 in 2nd and shift up to 3rd it will shift but not be firm and slip a bit. It never use to as its always been a firm shift.
I have a filter and kit here I guess its a cheep test to drop the pan and take a look for sediment

On a north American car this type of feel is clutch plate fiber burning/wearing off.

Might be.
On mine, I get flare only on automatic shift, only some of the time.
JHowell said there is a MB shift kit for that behavior, but I haven't bought/installed it yet.

Thanks guys, maybe Steve will stop by here and give us a lesson.
I would like to put a shift kit in it but sometimes that makes for premature ware.
I know that these trans are said to handle all kinds of power so it does not make sence that my stock engine can hurt 3rd gear.
Maybe I am getting to gung-ho and should read up more on the trans adjustments.

New filter and fluid along with some cable adjustments really made a difference with my car Brad.
