Default 930 guy looking to add 928 to the stable

Greetings 928 nutcases.

As the title states, I am a 930 guy who is seriously thinking of making a 928 my 2nd Porsche. I've never driven one, but have been in love with the shape since I was a little kid. My favorite matchbox car when I was a boy:

I've got a couple of 928 books on order to educate myself about the subtle details. In the 3 years I've owned my 930, I've been completely obsessed, and have become a bit of an encyclopedia about the model. At the moment, I feel like I know only a little about the 928.

I will drive this car. Not a daily driver, but I will use it for trips, and weekend jaunts (including winter months). Since I will put miles on it, I'm not looking for a concours perfect example. I like Some patina because then I won't flip out about the inevitable stone chips and dings, but at the same time I won't be happy with a used-up tired car. I've learned the hard way with my 930 how much $ is required to bring one of these old german warhorses up to my definition of par. In the 3 years I've owned it, I have rebuilt the transmission, engine, suspension, and updated the interior with new seats.

This time, I want to spend enough $ up front where I won't need to tear into the car immediately to deal with major issues. That said, I am not afraid to get dirty and will do most of (if not all) maintenance myself. My 930 engine rebuild was DIY, so I feel up to the task, but just don't want to buy a car only to put it up on jack stands for 6 months or a year.

To the 928 faithful here, what are your thoughts on the pricing "sweet spot" for such a car in today's market. I should mention that 5-speed is mandatory, not negotiable. I gravitate towards the S4 and later models with the bigger HP, but I will admit a bias towards the look of the earlier cars. I am also a huge fan of the funky colors available on the early cars. However, I do wonder if the performance of an early car will keep me happy.

Finally, if there are any of you around in the NY metro area who are willing to take me for a ride in your 928, I'd appreciate it. Of course I am willing to reciprocate:

I'd imagine you'd get some takers on this one.

Drive many before you decide. If your 930 is your designated "performance" car, then maybe you'd be okay with an early 928 that doesn't have the power of an S4. You will get more bang for the buck with an older model 928, but an older model in excellent condition will be a little harder to find than a newer one.

Do you have a price point in mind? If you're willing to pay up to $18K, you can get a very nice 5 speed S4.

OOH. You can drive my car if you let me drive yours. Sweet looking ride.

First of all, welcome!

Second of all, don't believe the hype that the newer cars have all the power.
Thanks to some hard working and crazy-dedicated eggheads we have crossovers, chip and fueling mods to bring the older cars ('85-'86) up to about 300rwhp and mine recently dynoed at 320rwtq. That's on par or more than any stock 928.

Superchargers are available for just about any MY that will put you way above any stock 928 numbers.

I'd say of you want a 5- speed with that classic OB look, you're probably looking at right around 10k for a reliable one with up to date maintenance. If you go with an S4+ 5 speed (or GT or GTS) the sky is the limit for a reliable one, but I wouldn't expect to find one for less than $15k unless you're really patient.

86.5 5-speed is my dream car. YMMV

My car will be back on the road in a week or so in case you're interested. I'm going to be rebuilding my steering rack over the holiday week. After that, let me know if you want to take it for a spin. I'm in Point Pleasant.

Welcome! Just a side question for the OP - is the color on your 930 Tahoe Blue?

Lovely 930. I always wanted one in just that color. I think you will find the 928 experience very different. I've enjoyed early, late, and middle cars. The early 16v cars tend to make me want to upgrade them. Middle 16v cars I just enjoyed in their stock configuration. S4 cars are just great to drive and enjoy stock. Never had a 85/86 32v car so I can't speak to that. GTS is a nice car, but I would not want to use it as a driver. What kind of funky colors do you like? There is a pretty nice/very origonal rootbeer '80 5 speed here in Honolulu on Craigslist that has been slowly working its way from $8K down to $3.5K. I need somebody to buy it before I do. First 928 I ever drove was exactly pumpkin colored. At the time I hated the color, but now I think I might like it.

You might like an 80 - 83 Euro S model. 300 hp and S4 like performance plus you might be able to find the funky colors. Another plus is they run the CIS injection like your 930.

Yes the 930 is my "performance car" I built the engine up from a 3.3l to 3.5l, upgraded cams, turbo, headers, muffler, twin plug crank fired ignition, head work, etc. Its currently making 350rwhp at 5500rpm at less than 10psi of boost, in a car that weighs in at 2900# fully dressed with half a tank of gas. It also has been lowered and the suspension has been tweaked to "street/track performance" level. Bottom line is the wife thinks it too loud and rides rough. I want the 928 to be the "civilized" porsche in my collection. I also want to keep it stock...I want to avoid the slippery slope of mods. BTDT with the 930.

I'm thinking up to 20k is palatable for me, but at that price I want to be able to just put gas into it for a while (reasonable expectation?). Over that and it begins to feel like too much. I've been looking online and seem to see tired cars in the 4 figure range, or garage queens at closer to 30k and up. Haven't yet seen the happy medium in between.

Thanks...that's exactly what I was thinking

The color of the 930, by the way, is Minerva Blue. I have seen 928s in the same color. Would probably not be able to resist an early 928 in the same color with Pasha interior.

Nice 930. Love the color too.

I can chime in for OB's. With a few mod's they are really, really fun. I've owned two S4's and always wanted a GT or a GTS. I love all 928's, but something happened on the way to buying a GTS. I found this '79 locally and fell in love. The color, the condition, the mods, the fact that it was local and well cared for. One ride and it was a done deal. With headers, exhaust, brakes, suspension work - these are seriously fun cars for the money.

I've got classic insurance for 250 a year. QQ plates so no registration or inspections ever again. No sunroof, ABS, airbag, power or heated seats, computers or most of all timing belt failures to worry about (non interference).

In watching the market, it seems like a really nice older car is 5k-10k and S4's are 10k-20k. A GTS will be 20k to 90k but it would be a crime to drive some of those GTS's. They are too rare to enjoy (and too expensive to repair). If I didn't find my car the way I did, the best option would be to pry a Rennlister's car away from him with a overpriced offer. (No I'm not shilling here.)

So in short, don't under estimate how great the old body cars can be. But you can't go wrong any way you go.

Buy a known Rlist car. You'll know it's history and it will likely have maintenance well beyond the average. Stick to your guns on the 5 speed. Read everything here for awhile. Remember that the forum spends a ton of time helping people with broken cars, so don't let the high rate of "my car won't start" threads worry you.

Get the moorehouse CD's for reference material and workshop manuals.

Come to all the east coast events, too bad you just missed a couple big ones!

jwasbury,

I sent you an email before I read all your requirements. My '84 would not be a candidate for you as it is an auto. That said, it is a very nice looking car and could be driven ANYWHERE in the country right now w/o batting an eye.

There is supposed to be a nice S4 5spd for $15k in San Antonio right now. One of our GTS owning members here knows the car (I do not) and can vouch for how nice it is. Maybe Chuck will jump in here. You also might find it on a search of for sale cars in San Antonio. It is a boring exterior color (Grand Prix White...though I personally really like the color) and the interior is Linen (kind of an off white that actually goes pretty well w/ the exterior color...better than I would have thought). I have no connection to the car but you might look around...could be the perfect car for you. I understand it has been very well maintained.

Good luck in your search! At $20k you should be able to find a very nice S4 5spd or even GT that is ready to go with few rock chips or interior flaws!

I was about to post a pic of my car, but you beat me to the punch. That's my minerva blue Bleumax....it is a 5 speed, first year example, and I actually enjoy the driving experience more in it than I did with my previous 84 and 86.5. They were auto boxes however. This car feels light nimble and fast. It is a cat delete car too, which helps.
My friend has a 930 RUF conversion, which I got to drive this summer. It is the scariest fastest thing I have ever driven - felt light as a feather, and don't dare let up on the accelerator if you are in a bend. I like the way my car shifts better however - more solid feel with the 928. Indeed, the 928 feels overall more substantial than the 911 and its varients, but not at all sluggish or heavy. I think you'll love having both.
Here's another pic or two of mine:
