A 928 Fantasy Camp with Greg Brown?
Hi everyone.
I had a very happy experience this afternoon visiting with Greg Brown- what a gentleman! His wife is absolutely great, too.
He was describing a neat father-son experience he had , completely rebuilding a 928 from the back bumper to front bumper with his son. Which got me to thinking...
I am interested in organizing a 928 "fantasy camp" with Mr. Brown. For everyone bring their 928s for a week, pull the engines, disassemble and recondition. We could all do it together, get steaks in the evening, have a great time together.
I think it would be a fantastic project and I know it would really make my year!
Would there be enough interest from, say, 6-10 of us Rennlisters who have easy access to Anaheim to form a 928 engine fantasy camp?

Remember that Greg does this for a living, and he HAS to clear XX number of dollars a day, every day.
It would be a education that would far exceed the cost, what ever that cost was.

Absolutely! I am envisioning a "tuition" that would offset (and then some) his time.
His description of his experience with his son is what gave me the idea (paraphrasing): "... by the end of the restoration, my son could pick out a 13mm socket at sight, and developed a feel for where things should go..."

I did it, tuition runs about $1000 a day, plus parts. Worth every friggin' penny.

I also discussed this a while back with Doc.....a weekend mini project..... When the 1st engine in the "Estate" lemons racer blew....we were talking about a core from 928intl going to Doc's and getting a "class" together to see how the refresh works.... Then I managed to find a good used motor locally.....but I still think it would be a great project!!!!

Are you talking about pulling, rebuilding and reinstalling all these motors in a week? Wow! You wouldn't be sitting around eating steaks and drinking beer in the evening...you'd be working all night.
But, hey, if Greg thinks this is doable, I want to be there too!

Knowing Greg as I do "Fantasy camp" might be much more like BOOT CAMP ! But you would learn what clean really means Now wash that block again !!! Also note that the father son project car NEEDED something like $10,000 in parts to make it up to Greg's standards.

Exactly. The build itself can be quick, but it's all the preparation, checking, measuring and if the heads need welding or a valve job.... Anyway, if the group worked on 1 or 2 motors it MIGHT be feasible, but each owner working on his own motor will spend an awful lot of time just waiting for Greg to get around to showing them how to do things and check their work. Otherwise it sounds like a great idea.

this could be a real money maker for Greg but maybe he could go through the process with one of his engines and then you go home and do yours. He could also make dvd and we wouldnt necessarily have to know or expect him to release any custom mods \fabrication to us....just the basic rebuild....1500 for the course and no cameras (protecting gregs proprietary info)

Greg comes over to check the torque on the head bolts that one of the guys has done. WHAT is this CRAP!!!!!!!...you are out at least 0.000001 ft-lbs on the outer bolts!!!... Take it off...and DO IT AGAIN!!!! This time....Do it RIGHT!!!! as he throws the torque wrench on the ground in disgust ...

I can't see rebuilding a bunch of cars in a week. May be one with 10 guys working on it. Drop the tranny torque tube and motor all at once. Then do a total mechinacial rebuild. Including steering rack wheel bearings calipers etc and of course tranny diff and motor.Could work.
I pick my race car as a patient I have a spare motor and tranny that need rebuilding.
or may be we could do the car that Mark A has the one that gets a new home every year I for get the name. The community car
Sound interesting any way.

You guys could be on to something. We need a Hell's Kitchen type of show. Other dumb shows like 'Pimp My Ride' were stupid. I mean really 3000 wheels and paint on a car and not one bolt turned on the engine? DOh!
