Default S4 - leaking steering rack

Hello,

My steering rack has a small leak at the column output. What are my options?

If a replacement is needed, where should I look for? Price range?

While this part is removed should I take this opportunity to do preventive maintenance on other parts? Oil pan gasket? Engine mounts?

Thanks.

Michel

I would suggest first see if the bolts are tight around the collar if they are then a new rebuilt rack might be the next thing to buy. 928INTL has very good racks thats what I use.
If you also need MMs and OPG then now would be the time,
also consider replacing the tie rod ends inner and outer, and the boots.
Also if the reservoir is original now would be a good time to replace the curved line and reservoir
and the shorter line thats crimped onto the hard line to reservoir

Bonjour Michel; The usual fix for the leaky rack is a replacement with rebuilt. Unless you have a local source in Canada, try Roger Tyson (928srus.com) in the US for sourcing or for advise on a source. The rack drops without having to disturb the oil pan and motor mounts. You should replace the tie-rods while the rack is down, however. I paid a bit over several hundred US dollars for a replacement, so its not expensive as racks go, if you do it yourself.

BTW: Mr Merlin is correct in that the OP/MM are due if not already done. You don't have to do them to get to the rack and its a much bigger job to add those to the list if you choose to do everything. Be sure and time budget accordingly.

I would look into replacing the steering rack bushing while you have it out, unless a rebuilt rack comes with new ones??

Thanks for the advices! (Merci Michael!)

Rack bushings: new. P/S tank: new. DIY: Not a problem.

OPG: I have a brand new cork gasket at home. Is it appropriate or should I look for something different?

MM: The originals are expensive. Any appropriate alternative?

Thanks.

Michel.
