Does Gas cap vary by year?

Interesting, but if all the caps are the same; why the different fit between the two I used? Is the crack possibly letting the cap sit down an inch more than a uncracked cap?

I dont mind buying a new cap but would hate to spend over a hundred bucks for a gas cap and then not have it fit so my door shuts fully.
I did Google around and found similar looking aftermarket caps that are supposed to fit. Some come with locks and other don't. They are around ten bucks. Seems everyone here says they wont fit though.

Did the zip tie and actually works quite well BUT I just found a used cap off a parts car for $15.00. Now will have to see how it fits when it arrives in a few days.

Some plastics can be welded. I'll check with my plastic supplier to see if he can tell what this plastic is and if it can be welded. If so, you can get a hot air welder and some rods, I think, from Harbor Freight for fairly cheap. If I get time today I'll look into it. I have a spare cap here by my computer that I have been using to design a simple tool to use to get them apart. Not successful with that yet.

I took the red part off my cap to allow the door to close flush, now I just use the white nylon part. Certainly not ideal.
My tank does have the bolt ear up by the neck.
If there was an aftermarket cap, that would be better.
Does anyone have a pic of the old SS ones?

Funny,
My 79 always had the same problem. You had to put the cap in a certain position to get the fuel door to close flush. (Not a problem on the GTS)
Maybe the tank neck sat closer to the fender on the OB's??

I showed my plastic supplier one of my caps. He thinks it is Nylon, but would have to burn a small piece of it to tell for sure by smell. He said if the burning produced a gas that burnbed you eyes and nose it will be acetal (delrin?delren?).
He gave me a scrap of Nylon and I bought a piece of nylon rod from him for welding. I have the welding set I bought some time ago, so if I can find one of my caps that I think is broken and I can take it apart I'm going to try to weld it.
He said that Nyson is weldable, but not very successfully. If the weld gets any tension or torsion it will break again. He said that one should run a continuous bead and not stop and start if possible. The stops cause some flaws in the weld. He also said that welded nylon may end up with pin holes occasionally. I don't think that will be a problem with welding the outer shell.
He doesn't have any red rod so I will have to use natural nylon for my experiment. I could use black, but I think Natural is better. He said that welding plastic, one must use the same kind of plastic being welded.

I don't know if it would work, but how about using some bumper cover repair epoxy? I used it on the batwing of my 951 to repair a tear and it worked well and is a bit pliable, but sturdy. They have one kit that comes with a mesh that can be put down before the epoxy for reinforcement. That may work if the new cap doesn't fit.

Barry, usually this kind of statement gives me cause to go check to be sure, but in this case, for some reason, I feel like that will be a waste of time. Can't say for sure why, but it seems like it.
