Default CL FS: 78 Euro AT, early example #295

ROW VIN 9288100295

I couldn't find any info on when the first AT was introduced, but was under the impression most MY 78's were manual.
This one is possibly the earliest AT in the US, given it's a low serial number grey market import.

Also, doesn't have the typical Euro sidemarker behind the front wheel-well.
I have only seen this missing on my #6.

What kind of 55k mile garaged all its life car needs complete paint and interior, transmission, wheel bearings, etc etc?

Weird looking import plate, no S in 78, makes me think it may have many curious details.

...
A grey market import where TMU.
However, any 33 years old car has a history. And often times the story may not be obvious, or logical.

Glamour Enterprises... that's rich!
May have been imported in the early '80's when the 'S' model was new.

odo is in miles which would generally indicate it has been swapped, import tag states year of mfg but not year of import..

Any more thoughts on this car? All of Jim's work with #1 and #6 have peeked (or is it peaked) my interest in what would be the earliest AUTO 928... I agree with Jim's assessment that the lack of EURO markers behind the front wheels must make this a very early car, but the question is HOW early relative to other AUTO's??? Might be worth adding to the Morrison Collection...

I noticed someone on ebay is trying to flip the burgundy 928 that Earl Gilstrom had for sale for it's owner, now asking $12,000 by the new owner.

YESSSSS! That is the word I was looking for! Dang it...so close yet SO FAR AWAY! I sent an email to the guy, we will see what comes back. Not really looking for this color (I really want an OB in Kermit green) but if this is really a SUPER EARLY auto (maybe the earliest??? Who knows) I'd be interested...

James,
Like I said in PM, odds are favorable that is the earliest AT, for ROW, and moreso the US.

Might be worth an X-post in Erkka's Master VIN thread.
I bet he could help you...

Good luck!

That car doesn't look that great, paint looks dull, and I had a silver 78 nicer than this one, find a better one.

Part of the interest, I think, is in finding very early examples, landmark or foundational cars.

Well said, Chris.

If I applied similar logic (928man's), I would've missed out of a couple of interesting cars.

We are at the point in the history of these early 928's, where we may not have options other than to restore, to have the right 928 to own.

Thats fine if early serial numbers are your interest, but there must be other cars out there besides this one that have early numbers.

Now is the time to do it. Another year or two of economy in shambles and these irreplaceable yard ornaments are going to be melted down. I think the number 1 car was one that could have easily suffered that fate.

Bill, next time you decide to fix one, instead of paying $30+, put it on a trailer and drive it down here and let us attack it economically.

I'm averaging just over 5K, all inclusive on 4 of them as daily drivers. Not perfect, but a hell of a lot of fun!
