Default 6E171 AC compressor leaking oil?

I just got it togather a month ago and while sliding under this weekend to tackle the forward shift cup I noticed oil collecting (assume ester as that is what I put into it and it has a green tint from the leak detector stuff previously installed- not by me) across the bottom of the compressor at each joint.

I am guessing the seals are going. Is this a typical failure mode? Suggestions on sources for a rebuild kit assuming they come withj the seald for the middle and front and back caps?

Thanks

Yes, the shaft seal can leak. You can get the kits here:

Thanks Bill.

It seems the compressor has oil accumulating at both end cap seams and forms at the center seam as well. Has anyone rebuilt a 6E171? The link provided doesn't look like it has seals for all thye leak points I seem to have.

Thanks

I just resealed mine this past weekend with plans to finally get the A/C working in it. There is a seal for each end cap, a gasket on each end, a center body seal and a carbon seal on the shaft. You will need to order the body seal kit and the shaft seal separately as there is no complete kit that contains them all. It's a very straight forward process, not complicated to do. Just remember the key is absolute cleanliness.

Tomorrow I am going to replace the O rings, dryer, and expansion valves on my S4. Should I think about replacing these seals also??

That 6E171 kit may not be complete. They also have gasket kits and there are other sources as well.

I have resealed my 6E171 successfully. However, I recently failed on a 10PA20 (later model) - leaked from every seal after I finished even though I did a careful job.

Only if you have evidence of a leak.

Bill, have you done a post mortem on the 10PA20?

Curious, as I have at least 2 case leaks. No hurry for me - I live in the UK - so this'll be a winter fix project.

Tim,

I can't say. The compressor I have came off Brian's Sexual Chocolate car. I had it tested by the same place that did my lines in Austin and they said the pump and clutch were good but only text upto about 125 PSI.

I did convert my system to R134 and ester oil so not sure if that has anything to do with the seeping from the compressor joints. It still works but I dojn't want to destry a good compressor by letting it got to long.

the local shop that rebuilt my lines will repalce all seals and pressure test for $97. Parts alone would be $45 so looks like a good deal.

No, I don't know what went wrong. EVERY seal/gasket/o-ring leaked. It was Nicole's compressor. She bought a new one rather than fuss with it any more.
