Default Motor mount experience

I am looking for experience with different motor mounts. I just installed the Volvo mounts from Roger on my 90 S4. The engine vibrations can be felt inside at idle. When the original squished ones were in there no vibration.
Now I have an opportunity to install the 928 motorsport solid rubber ones. Does anybody have any experience with those or is it better to go with the original Porsche ones?
I have one new original one sitting around. This will be for my 91 GT.
Thanks
Bilal

If you didn't do the trans mounts with the motor mounts, you may have only corrected part of the problem and with the engine at least now at the right height (I assume you checked), you may have loaded things down to the trans end of the system, and if it's sitting on the cross member now.........

When I did mine (both ends at the same time) there was a huge improvement. Unfortunately, the trans units are only availble from Posche. Check with Roger on availablility and pricing.

Oh, just as a note, the trans mounts are a complete breeze compared to the motor mounts......

Bilal. Are you certain you have the new mounts in correctly? Is something rubbing somewhere. You should have silky smoothness with the new volvo mounts. Solid rubber mounts will make it vibrate even more.

I would agree with Rob, check your trans mounts. They could be going bad.

I've installed several sets of these and have not had any vibration issues. As to the other mounts you asked about. Roger stopped selling those due to quality issues from the manufacturer.

FACTOID: The more "solid" a mount is, the more vibration will be transmitted to the chassis. Therefore, if you don't mind replacing the Porsche units on a fairly regular basis (apparently they tend to leak), the fluid-filled ones should at least in a perfect world, provide the best insulation for the passenger compartment from the vibrations of the drivetrain.

For a true motorsports experience, try the metallic solid units. You can probably feel indiviual spark pulses after you crank down the fillings in your teeth to cut down on the buzzing in your ears......

There's a ton of great info on here regarding the options and results....search is your friend!

In reality, a very large number of us here have little use for doing the motor mounts on a regular basis, preferiing instead to chase other gremlins.
As such, the non-fluid units (Volvo) are the preferred route in terms of durability and net results.

I have three 928's with the Volvo mounts one 87, one 88, and an 89. The first two have been in over one year now, no problems. The 88 was driven to Anchorage, Alaska from DFW, a 4,000 mile trip with some bad road sections. No problems.

Went from solid aluminum to volvo mounts. I can't even feel it idle. With the solid mounts it was tough to hear your passenger chat!!

I am not sure where this "You have to replace the factory MM so often comes from"

Hey Greg,
Just from all the posts I went through before I did mine....that seemed to be the consensus. No data to back it up.

Wondering if the Volvo MM are fine but the 'ears' carrier might be close to the frame at idle. Have you eyeballed the mounts after install to make sure things are clear?

I have the solid rubber mounts which I bought before I knew of Rogers mounts.
I here Rogers are the best.
I can feel the engine run but I am fine with that as it helps me feel how its running.
You must have an engine miss or like the others said its something touching or the trans mounts are also bad.

This is what I would check first. The last S4 I've put these on, I left these plates out.

I am a huge fan of the Anchor 2698 Hydraulics ($20 ea from RockAuto) which I fitted about 40k miles ago. Transformed the car especially the gear changes. Even though my car now spends a lot of time on the track there is no way I would want to reduce the ride comfort and general finesse by fitting less compliant engine mounts.

I replaced the transmission mounts some months after, the difference this made was very modest in comparison.

The reason we stopped selling the Anchor/Corteco (same manufacturer in India and China) was the quality. They started making them hollow with no added water so they collapsed with the weight of the engine. Buyer beware.

Bilal - something wrong with your install I suspect. Make sure the hooks on the crash retension setup are not touching.

I have a set of Anchor solids on my GTS and after 7 years and 60K miles they are still fine. Shame the company was sold and the quality died a natural.

The Volvo Hydraulic mount is a great alternative and well proven over a number of years. I am sure the factory mounts are good also but when you consider $100 v $500 the decision is clear.

I bought my Anchors at least six years ago, so if the quality control has since disappeared then I would agree with Roger - the Volvo mounts would seem to be an excellent alternative to the absurdly priced Porsche part.
