1000+km and a speeding ticket
This past weekend wife and I wanted to celebrate our double digit anniversary. One of our favorite places is Seaside on the Oregon Coast.
We both love road trips, especially in a Porsche. Our last road trip was with my wife carrying my son in the 993 cabrio down to the Porsche Parade in Colorado. Since then and after the arrival of my son in this world a road trip with the 993 was out of the question.
Enter the 928 My wife did not believe that we would be able to drive the 928 with all the "stuff" that my son "needs" Well I was determined and sure enough the 928 swallowed everything with room to spare. Wife was impressed.
So we cross the border, normally an ordeal but this time it was easy. Even the Homeland Security Officer was impressed. "You dont see too many of these" he proclaimed.
The weather was horrible. Rain and more rain. Add wind it was hell on wheels. First impression at speed, 75mph+ no sweat in this mayhem. The car is rock solid and very confidence inspiring. A big change from anything I have driven in these conditions, bar a Panamera 4S which gave me the same confidence. As for the 911.. dont ask
Passing by Seattle was a nightmare. Stop and go stop and go all the way to the intersection with 101. Finally the 928 and my right leg can stretch a little. Quickly I make it to the coast, some nice twisty roads there and I'm having a ball. The rain keeps on hard and the wind has picked up even more. An RV in front of me almost lost it completely swerving wildy from the 40mph gust winds. I pass him quickly and I see him slowing to a stop on my rearview. I bet he had a code brown moment!
What keeps on impressing me besides how easy it is to put miles on this car, is the stability. Even with this gail force winds the car is rock solid. No movement, just straight as a bullet. Honestly I have never driven another car that stable in these conditions!
We finally arrived at Seaside, I could have driven twice as long and still be fresh. After having a wonderful time, I took the same way back.
This time the sky was dark but the roads were dry. I pushed a bit on the twisty stuff and loved it. Dispatching other cars was of no concequence, my wife said, "wow its like a jet taking off". Yeap that jet got me in trouble in a hurry
Coming down a crest, thankfully I had just slowed down as I was closing on another car... Washington's finest was coming the other way. Damn... I knew it... he passes by, I see him slam the brakes, u turn, lights on and I pull to the right.
"Good morning Sir, you know why I stopped you? We were speeding a little ha?" "Errrr... my speedo is in KM, I was following traffic... I was doing about 100kph, maybe 60? " " Well I clocked you at 75 and then had to be sure again, you had slowed down abit and I clocked you at 69"
needless to say I was not spared, officially the 928 is baptised. Realizing that the court house that i needed to sent the payment in was on my way in South Bend, I decided to stop and pay it on the spot. So within half hour I was in probably one of the coolest old buildings I have ever seen, the court house in South Bend. "When was the ticket issued?" Err... about half an hour ago i said. The clerk looked at me and said "probably that it the record around here for the fastest payment!" LOL
The drive back was thankfully without incident and we arrived safe at home Monday night.
I must say that I was impressed driving the car for the past month, but this trip elevated my appreciation for the fine job that Porsche did with this car, 20 years later its still an amazing car to own and drive and i look forward to being the caretaker for years to come.

Pretty sure I've been through, if not stayed the night in Seaside. We have family that like the area and try and get us all to meet up.
Road trip in the 928 is sweet, but I'm not into the liking it even in rain stage.

great story!
Totally relate to "like a jet taking off" - my Portuguese mother-in-law named our 86 "SATA", after the Portuguese airline, for the same reason

Good road trip. IS your car from Japan? Noticed the front fender extensions. HAve the rear quarter panels been widened or is this one of the rare factory 91's that came with the pre-production GTS quarter panels?
More pics of the car in sunlight. That is an amazing color.

Sounds like a fun trip ( except for the ticket ) with opportunities to open that thing up, beautifull color.

Yes the first trip we took in the 928 opened our eyes to how the car handled.
some of the mountain road corners that were rated for under a 100k we would enter at 150k and exit at 170k What a great car.
I need to ask as I have heard this many times before.
Why do you guys worry about your plates in the pictures?

Thanks for the compliments on the color, indeed it looks fantastic. As for sunlight pics... I guess that will have to wait till next spring up here in the frozen Tundra when the sun will reappear hopefully LOL

These so-called "troopers" love Porsche 928s. I got bit here in Wyoming at 82 in a 75 zone. Incidently, a "trooper" is a U.S. Army soldier. The guys with the ticket books are just bonehead cops.

928mac - beautiful car and most unique too. I'll wait until Spring if I must. That violet is extraordinary.

This is a set from a 997 so its stock 997 sizes:
18" wheels, 235/40 front, 265/40 rear. Not ideal, as there is a difference in the rolling diameter, having said that I have not noticed anything weird happening.
When I need to change the rears I will try to find the 265/35 size to match better the fronts.
