Default Powdercoaters / platers SUCK

I've resorted to painting all my own parts, because these bozos can't get it together. I've been quoted all sorts of prices for plating / coating, seemingly at random, depending on how they feel that day. As an example yesterday I was quoted 500 for intake and cam covers, a little later another guy quoted me 400 and a bit later someone wanted "anywhere between 1000 and 1500, but you'll be very happy".

The $1500 guy also kept telling me we should really use hi-temp coat because "you know, it's OK if you sign off on it and take responsibility for it, I can do it for you, but exhaust parts need hi-temp, they get so hot" .... I must have explained 5 times that these are NOT EXHAUST PARTS

got the call that my spider, center section, trans member, rear sway bar are done. 325 bucks...... sounds like extortion by your shops.

AGREED. They can suck it, I'm painting ... if it was good enough for Porsche, it is good enough for me. I'll have the parts stripped and outgassed.

beware of painting. Not durable as powdercoating, but like anything, prep work is key. I painted my intake, six months later took it apart again for powder coating. My advice, find a better powder coater even if it means driving or shipping.. Ask around, there has to be a good one around. I found a great person after several months of digging. the good ones will have been around for a while, and they know what they are doing.

BTW, the pic of your engine looks great. I bet most of that is not painted.

I will try to get the whole process posted but I painted my intake and cam covers a year ago and they still look great. I found a place that sells a converter for the Mg that allows the primer to bond extremely well. This then allows you to use any type/color paint you want.

that's amazing.

hot tank then bake everything and paint hot. baked a pair of new big-black calipers at 350 degrees and suspended them from a hook and painted (yellow)... added a couple gloss coats. you would think their powdercoated.

I get 450 for a water bridge, upper intake and cam covers done in a single color.
If you send yours directly to Millers Powder coating in Atlanta you can save a Bunch of money over that 450, cause that includes my time for making two trips of two plus hours each way, so I have over a full days work just getting them up there and back.

Metal finishers of Atlanta does a really good job on the plating, but sadly they really pissed me off, so I am not going back to them.

Although I may send some one else with my parts up there, that high and mighty moral stance only goes so far.

I get intake valve covers in one color, water bridge, all concentric washers, throttle linkage, and a couple other bits for either $300 or $400 depending on color.

This is dropping off completely greasy uncleaned parts with no prep and picking up ready to reassemble. Though I still spend on hour or two cleaning and ensuring I will not have a problem down the road.

H, the place I use in Orange is about $300 for a complete set of intake, side covers, and valve covers. Very happy with the result both times. Theyr'e about 3 miles from my hospital, if you want to ship your intake here I can drop off and pick up and send back. Though I know you're in a hurry!

That's the same colour I had my intake, valve covers and water bridge painted as part of the engine fire restoration.

I got the inspiration from Bill Swift.

Looks killer.

I just finished my Intake Refresh with painted runners, plenums & oil filler. It looks great in silver with clear! I know it wont stand up like powdercoating but I was getting jerked around with all the same stories you've heard... The 86.5 's organ pipes & plenums cover just about everything else so I skipped the valve covers - werent leaking so no need to go THAT far

Cant seem to upload any pics...
