Default Parting Profit?

So I have my 1982 928S sitting in my garage. It needs more work and money right now than what I am willing to put into it. Radiator is shot, Waterpump, needs new timing belt, new body paint, interior re-done etc.

Right now, I want to pull the engine and rebuild, to put into a 928 at a later time.

I know I'm going to want a 928 no matter what, but if I were to part the current one out now, and sell parts individually, would I be making a good profit? I would guess selling without the engine would make selling the car as a whole from there, very cheap. Would it just be worth keeping until I finish the engine?

Thinking of parting out, for some money on rebuilding the engine.

With a few days work you should get $300 to $500 pretty easily.

Why bother rebuilding a 4.5L? Cheaper to buy a used 4.7L and rebuild it with more common and lower cost parts.

Although I think the 82 has a nice motor...it is unpowered compared to the 4.7. Are you going to be happy with 200 HP?

Keep in mind that it will take years to sell the good parts. Ask me how I know.

I saw it on TV once.

Did an 86.5 that had a lot of desirable parts. it was a lot of work and a lot of time (2 years)

Your car doesn't have too many parts that will be worth much money. Sure you'll get more by parting it than by selling what you don't want whole, but it won't be a lot. $2-3K maybe depending on how patient you are. Based on your description of the car even that estimate might be optimistic.

I will take some pictures later today and post them up, for a good visual on it's condition.

Maybe I will just turn it into a 928 "Death Race" variation.

I think it will be a lot of time and money for maybe $1500. I'd sell the car for whatever you can get out of it and buy a nicer/newer car later. The 4.5 engine is basically worthless as it's pretty expensive to rebuild. The 4.7 makes more power and is cheaper.

Does the engine NEED rebuilding ?? or just a tbelt waterpump service that only takes a DAY. A running driving car is much easier to sell. Some radiator leaks are repairable the side tanks are pretty cheap. The Death Race cars all the "plate steel" is just painted styrofoam so they are not too heavy to move

The engine does not necessarily NEED rebuilt, but I think I would like doing that, getting fresh gaskets in it, and finding anything else wrong to fix it, apart from timing belt, waterpump, radiator. From the responses here, maybe it would be best to get a 4.7L.

Does a 4.7L fit in an S or specifically the S4+?

Sounds like the basis for a good business. While many have tried, few have succeeded.

Parting a single car is a little different than trying to start a business.

I parted a 968 last year and did pretty well as long as you don't take into account my time or garage space used. It's not for the faint of heart though. Unfortunately for the OP, his model of 928 is one of the worst as far as parts values. I don't think I would take the time to fully part one even if it was given to me free.

O K got it, you just WANT to take the motor apart for fun ! Because to rebuild it would require lots and lots of new parts otherwise you are just putting a used engine back together if it were to ever get done. Thats all right others have done the same or worse.
