I have worked diligently on my 1979 928 since I acquired it last year, but an opportunity has arisen for me to move on to another project, and I do not want to abandon the 928 to a couple of years of nothing. If you are interested in a good project car this may be for you. I'm not opposed to keeping the beast either but would rather replace it with less of a project 928.

Not a lot of mystery to it, I pulled the car out of a guy's "shop" where it had been neglected. So far I have replaced or serviced (with Porsche parts unless they were not available):

- plugs, cap, rotor, green wire
- radiator hoses
- air hoses, all of 'em
- air distributor
- brakes, rotors, pads, brake lines (now stainless)
- rekeyed to match ignition key
- short shifter
- 928 motorsports front ball cup
- re-bushed the rear shift linkage
- new kumho tires all around
- new h4 headlamps
- spray painted the key marks (you do know you have to paint this car!)
- brand new WUR with perfect pressures
- new filters
- new engine bay and rear fuel lines
- good fuel tank and new strainer
- new fuel pump
- new grommets on the brake reservoir and booster
- new intake runner gaskets
- new water tower gaskets and seal
- new f.i. wiring harness and connectors

The car is a standard 79 body without a sunroof. The spoilers, which were not original, were removed and the holes will need to be patched when you do the paint. The interior is cork and is worn but intact. It looks better than most but needs a nice refresh. The carpet is the original and has that old sliver knit smell, which isn't bad but isn't great. It has a black center console installed and the original is included, both are in marginal condition.

The car starts, runs, and drives, quite well. Someone with more knowledge of 928s could probably make it scream. Compression is good. Steering rack has a minor leak and I have not diagnosed the source.

The A/C works as do all of the creature comforts, though the windows are noisy going up and down. The interior lamps work most of the time, the climate control system works and holds pressure to switch modes.

The electrical system seems to be fine, it does not blow fuses or do any other weirdness.

The radio is a period-correct blaupunkt "detroit" and sounds great; the speakers are blaupunkt in the fronts and OEM in the back.

$2250 and it is yours. If you're wondering the price is based on the $ in parts I've put into it only, and that doesn't include the hundreds I'm sure in various fasteners, clamps, hoses, and the like.

I'm not abandoning 928's! I didn't even expect to like 928s until it came home and I started tinkering with it. I'm hooked. I want to see this car go to someone who desires to get it going soon. If it sits for another two years (as it will if I proceed down my current path) it will be a damned shame. I plan to get a 928 that is further along than this one.

Right now I have two FIATs and it looks like a rather rare Alfa coming in; I have to set the Alfa as a priority. The 928 "experiment" will simply change to a car that doesn't need a complete cosmetic restoration, which I don't have room for.

I also think this car, whether I do it or someone else, deserves some proper time back on the road. A 79 without a sunroof, OB, 5 speed. Not that common! A unique car in any book.

So if it sold today, give me two or three months, I'll get another 928 and the world will be righted again. Then again I am at least as likely not to sell it, and in two or three months will have found a way to get it painted...

I try to be illusion free! I'm getting some serious inquiries, which means now I'm standing in the shop looking at the car and getting cold feet. I actually hate selling cars. Well, all of them except the Land Rover I had. That was like getting released from prison.

Well Jim, after 3 years since my last 928 sold I have decided to get back in, and fortunately it is with this 1979.
I have a tentative list of projects starting from the interior and working my way out. Brad was nice enough to forward a to-do list under the hood. I hope to document the work done over the next year, mostly cosmetic, and have a fun project for my Son and I. If all goes as planned I will be at SITM 2013.
I am sure that I will need plenty of help from rennlist and look forward to getting to know everybody again.
