Default a/c belt size

I just replaced the A/C belt on my S4. Adavanced Auto Parts listed two belts. One was a 44-1/2 and one was a 42-7/8. Get the 42-7/8 belt. The 44-1/2 is too long. Wonder what would make them list a belt this long? Were there pulley size differences over different years?

They probably sell twice as many belts with that practice.

What does your owner's manual say for the belt size? For the 1990 S4/GT, all the service belts are listed on page 114. Might want to consider buying one that's sold in metric sizes.

stock size is 1080mm but sometimes for a reason I do not understand 1080mm is to big so we also stock a 1075mm

No. The compressor model changed from 6E171 to 10PA20C (starting in 1990).

The crank A/C pullys are different sizes with these two compressors. Could be the compressor pullys differ in diameter too.

So, per Porsche (PET), the 6E171 takes the 12.5x1125, while the 10PA20C take the 12.5x1080. Anyway, the owner's manual specifies the correct size.

OK Mr. Griffiths I will rise to the bait 8>)

PET clearly shows 90+ as 999 192 335 50 and up to 89 as 999 192 305 50 why do you disagree?
Not as per your post.

See. now I know. Since my compressor is a Griffith replacement, the WSM is kind of a shot in the dark. The shorter one works great.

My '91 has a 10PA20C and the 1080mm belt is too long. I can get a new belt meagerly tight by adjusting the bracket all the way to the end. My car needs a 1075mm belt. PET and its part numbers are nice, but physically fitting the right belt on the car is nicer.

The '91 S4/GT owner's manual specifies 12.5 x 1125mm belt for the "air conditioning pump" which is hilariously wrong (well, until you actually try to fit that belt on the car). The US '93 GTS manual (which has the exact same compressor and bracket assembly as a '91) says 12.5 x 1080mm, but like I said, that is still slightly too long, at least for my car.

"Time to design a "universal belt" lol."

Done.

Actually works great on woodworking machinery. Runs noticeably more smoothly than a standard V-belt.
