928 looks like AMC Pacer
This “Risky Business” garbage came out in USA Today...
"Though the 928 model looks unfortunately like an AMC Pacer, it nonetheless was a marvel of fast comfort at the time. A water-cooled, aluminum V-8, generous back seat (by Porsche sports car standards) and strange, pop-up headlights gave it enough cachet to at least partly overcome Porsche fans' resistance to cars that didn't use air-cooled engines, didn't have the engine in back, and tried to suggest that luxury and high-performance might actually be a good marriage."

Here you go...
"Porsche designer Tony Lapine credits the Pacer with having inspired his use of a bubble-shaped tail end for the highly regarded Porsche 928" (Orange Country Register, 2001).
Tony Lapine also designed the Pacer.
There you have it. The ugly family secrets have been revealed. Some questions should never be asked !

Three Wheelin'
That's fine... who cares if he got it from an AMC Pacer? Just because you use ONE design element from a econobox POS makes the 928 therefore crappy?? It's just like that "**** Camaro" comment in the "911 guys are d*ckheads" thread; yeah they both have a V8, 4 wheels and some seating, that's about where the similarities end. That's like saying humans have hearts, and dogs have hearts, therefore, dogs are people too... Sharing one element with another car does not make them equal.

Oh, and the 911 is powered by a flat 6, not a V8
Welcome. Glad to help out where I can.

No, he didn't.
The AMC Pacer was designed by Richard Teague.
Lapine worked at GM from '52 through '65 when he was transfered to Opel. He took over as head of design at Porsche in '69.
The Pacer was designed in '71. Lapine was already at Porsche when the Pacer was inked.

Also found this tidbit...
"The body (of the 928), styled by Wolfgang Möbius under guidance of Anatole Lapine"
Bottom line, whomever worked on it's design, The 928 rocks!

I am not at all upset about the Pacer reference which I think is quite true with certain styling cues. However, the article is full of errors that made it just so painful to read.
"During a make-out scene in the movie, De Mornay's character bumped the manual-transmission 928 gearshift into neutral and it rolled into Lake Michigan. In real life, that would be hard to do without also pushing down the clutch pedal at the same time."
There was no make-out. The girl got upset and went back to the car to grab her purse and accidentally bumped the gearshift to neutral. As all of us mere mortals know that one does not need to step on the clutch to make that happen. BTW, the girl did not have the "heart of gold".

"Bohemian Rhapsody" comes to mind. I really liked the AMX 390. My dad had one in 1968. Quite a fun time laying in the back on the way to Sebring. G

What is more of a crime is how the guy who researched, found the RB car, bought it, made a documentary about it, lost his shirt on the film, went to sell the car on Ebay, was pointed to here where excellent suggestions were made, ignored them all and sold it for $9K to Fourney, who knows how to type up a press release, who will probably get 10x his $ on the car. Sigh...
